New site look and software upgrade Feedback Thread

Hello Everyone,

We're proud to announce that the new site look and feel has been completed for TCCOA.com ! Our designers and software engineers have been hard at work on this for several months. It's designed to modernize the site, make it easier to use, and to make it more attractive to new members and guests that visit .

The forum software we use, vBulletin, by default is not designed to be friendly to the eyes or to look modern. We went down to the nuts and bolts of the forum software and templates, and have done a ground up approach. There are several things you will notice now that the new design is live.

1) The site should be significantly faster.

We have applied every modern technique to speed up page load and tested with all modern browsers. We want the forum to be extremely fast and easy to use.

2) The site will work much better in mobile and tablet views

We've started applying responsive design, and have designed and tested against android and iPhone devices, Android tablets, and iPads. If you are sitting at your desk or on your couch, or just on your phone, the site will work much better than it did before, and load fast. We are still working on improving the experience even further in the months to come, but we wanted to launch this as quickly as we could.

3) The homepage is bright, crisp and clean.

We wanted the first page users saw to look beautiful, so that when a new guest arrives and is debating whether to join TCCOA.com, they see a beautiful doorway, and they walk right in.

As a forum member you can choose to use the new design (which is on by default) or you can go back to the old design. We ask that you give it a chance and see if you like it. Like anything new, it will be unfamiliar at first, but we suspect that the speed difference will make you want to use this new one. If you do decide to switch back, the link is at the bottom left of each forum page, you pull down and select the theme called "TCCOA.com Classic".

4) Garages will be featured on the site

You can show off your ride, You can post pictures in your garage and share it with others. Make sure you post up some images to share with the community at the link below.

http://forums.tccoa.com/garage.php?do=index

5) Users will be able to register with Facebook, Twitter or Google+

6) The side bar can be hidden in your user options.

Click on my profile / user cp at the top right.

- click on edit your details on the left.
- Look for Show Sidebar on Forum Pages under Additional Information.
- Click disable and save.

7) Another new great feature is the @Mention user plugin. You can tag members by simply using the @ symbol.

8) Drag and Drop image uploader

We hope you enjoy it, and if you have any questions on the design, please let us know, feedback is appreciated.

If there are any issues you see. Post them up here and we will get them worked out.

Thanks,
-Your TCCOA.com Team.

Now I just noticed that the forums have replaced our standard homepage. While it was indeed outdated and overdue for replacement, there were quite a few useful tech articles on there dating back 10-15+ years. Are these still accessible on the site?

EDIT: Seems to still be there if you go to "http://www.tccoa.com/articles/" but it's probably not easy to find for people who do not know they are there. They are great for answering simple questions and providing instructions for many in depth modifications.

Looks good Jeff!

One thing for me though.

Not sure if it's still coming when everything is done, I was wondering about the new posts/no new posts on the various forums. Any chance of adding color to the new posts instead of just the darker gray? The old forums were blank with no new posts and had the orange when there was a new post.

Time to check more things out!

Joe

Edit: On the main page too!

Can you add the updated logo to the Classic Forum view? - Just the logo not the whole banner. Thanks.

Where do I turn the "Recent Discussions" sidebar off at? I've found where to minimize it but not where to turn it completely off.

Mods? Yea, I got mods ...
Air silencer delete, warp drive, dilithium crystals, flux capacitor, Slingshot Rubber band power adder, Moonshine & Gas, Leaf Blower Supercharger, Hamster Wheel & Hamster, Energizer Bunny generating 1.21 gigawatts, Mr. Fusion® Home Energy Reactor, hover conversion and a sextant celestial navigation system (The original GPS)

Yeah the sidebar is the only thing I'm not particularly fond of, I like the new skin though, good change.

The banner seems to have been cut down from what was previewed earlier, the Cougars are completely cut off, so now it's just Mark VIII-Thunderbird-Thunderbird - No Cougar love, I see how it is

You should be able to toggle the sidebar, instructions in the community post.

They are still there in the banner it is just based upon monitor size and resolution. They have to code that way for reactive sizing for mobile, tablets, and all size screens.

Heya,

It is nothing that can be update quickly, it would have to go back to design and be reworked and I know that team is backup up right now.

Sidebar toggle is here:
http://forums.tccoa.com/profile.php?do=editprofile

Toggle right sidebar
This allows you to turn off the sidebar on forum threadview pages.
For Premium Members, this turns off the sidebar on all forum pages.
Enable Disable

Jeff,

Here's a screen shot of the old forums. See how the forums with the new posts are highlighted in orange compared to the ones that show no new posts.

What do you think?!

A couple Cougars are there on the far right side of the banner, but it looks like if your screen is anything less than 1920 pixels wide you won't see the whole thing.

Overall I think it's a fresh layout. An updated layout was bound to happen eventually and I think this is a good progression.

Yeah reactive sizing, that is why I put up two samples to the mods.

Same here. I'm still getting deeper into the Thunderbird hobby and I'm glad there's still a place for us.

Though this is pedantic, what happened to Mark VIIs in our logo and banner? I know only a few of us have them, but they're part of our group. (not to mention they're awesome)

Honestly, as much as I like them too virtually nobody here has one, nor has anyone been joining that has one. We have little to no tech relating to them, or the Fox Tbirds and Cougars for that matter, and sites like Lincolns of Distinction and Lincoln vs. Cadillac can and do serve them better. Really even Mark VIIIs are somewhat unsupported here, more of us have parts from them than the cars lol

By and large our core is, and has been since I've been around at least, a site for Non SC MN12 Tbirds and Cougars. The rest filled the banner nicely, but it wasn't us, I think dropping the VII gives our club a lot more clarity. We're Thunderbird and Cougar, we're Bird Cats

I thought we were defined by 1983-1997 Thunderbirds Cougars, and etcetera platforms, including Mark VII and VIII. I don't really see any reason to exclude them after 15 years. I think the reason we have moved mostly towards the newer MN12s is the passage of time. My car is a 1989 model, built in December of 1988, and even my car is old by comparison to most of the membership here. Just because time has left some of us behind, doesn't mean that WE should leave them behind. I recall a member who has joined us just a couple of days ago who has Mark VIIs, but just bought his first Thunderbird. I feel these people should be welcomed. At the very least, as one more place that supports their hobby.

We just dropped the Mark VII from the logo. They're still welcome of course! The reason was there aren't that many of them and it cleaned the logo up some to drop the Mark VII from it. + what Matt said.

They're not "excluded", and certainly not un-welcome; they're just not mentioned in the logo any longer that's all. That's the only thing that's changed as far as Mark VII's are concerned.

BTW, I just noticed the new smilies and they suck! I'm glad to see the old ones are still available.

Pretty cool..

I'm still checking it all out though..It looks like there's been quite a few new things added..

I really like the Garage section..It even gives non-paying members a chance to post up pics of their car, and some details about it..

There is so many new things with this upgrade..I'm thankful that you guys are keeping the "Classic" look available..

I'll probably go back, and forth between "Full" and "Classic" depending on what device I'm using..

About the only thing I don't like are the new Ads..

I've never had an issue with the site being slow no matter what device I was using..

So I probably won't even notice the upgraded speed..

If I have any issues navigating through the new site..I'll post them here..

IMO..This upgrade is a step towards the future of TCCoA..

I'd like to thank all of the staff responsible for making this happen..

Where do I turn the "Recent Discussions" sidebar off at? I've found where to minimize it but not where to turn it completely off.
Heya,

It is nothing that can be update quickly, it would have to go back to design and be reworked and I know that team is backup up right now.
Thanks. I would think it wouldn't be any more difficult than replacing the old logo with the new one with the same file name in the same folder. No need to change any of the code that calls the image.

Whoever created the banner should have the logo as a stand alone file. I understand though. It's a small thing that can wait.

Potential picture upload issue.

Just figured I would mention I had a issue with several pictures I up loaded to the new garage section that uploaded rotated 90 degrees. This was with a iPad running IOS 8.4x using the Photos app. Simply opening the photo for editing in Photos then saving it seemed to solve the issue. Even though the orientation stayed the same the picture would up then up load correctly. I'm not sure if it was a glitch in the upload software or something related to my specific photos. It may help someone.

Thank you so much for the Garage Section and the drag and drop image linking!

Yup, they are not going anywhere.
