The only problem with Tirerack is they don't sell every brand of tire, and don't do reviews on tires they don't sell. Plus, Joe Blow doesn't push his tires as hard as professional drivers and may believe their tires are great because that's all they know (besides the worn out tires they're replacing). Any new tire is better than most worn out tires. If we could hear from professional drivers I would believe reviews a lot more. Mr. Roush spent a lot of money testing tires, I'll listen to him before soccer mom or 18 YO kids any day! Just trying to help my fellow T-bird owners get the most bang for the buck.

Firehawk Wide Oval

I've had Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals (Ultra-high performance category, 255/45/17 @ 40 PSI) on the car now for about three months and they're doing exactly what I hoped they would do. They are my summer months only tires; my "old" tires that I will reference in comparison to are Firehawk Indy 500 (Performance all season category, 215/70/15 at 33-35 PSI) which I will be using in the winter months. I must note that the front two tires I bought used with about 60% treadwear remaining; they are about 6 years old now. I don't drive the car hard by default, however I do push it pretty hard on occasion which led me to discover the limits of the narrow and tall stock tires. I was looking for a tire that wouldn't hydroplane over puddles at high speed, a tire that wouldn't squeal or break free during abrupt maneuvers or high speed cornering like my old Indy 500s (215/70) did, and a tire that wasn't going to cost me a fortune.

I can take a 15 MPH rated 90 degree turn at 35-38 MPH without getting a chirp. I have yet to break them free under any circumstances.

Steering response is amazing - with the old tires the car would follow the steering wheel in a leisurely fashion. These tires seem to anticipate what my next move will be and do it as I'm moving the wheel. Probably sounds strange but the first time I took the car out on the new tires it took me a few miles to get used to it. The car feels extremely tight and glued to the road.

I haven't had them long enough to evaluate the treadwear, but after roughly 3000 miles they still look pretty much new.

The noise level is most apparent under sub-30 MPH driving and maneuvering, especially when under braking where a bit of a "rough road" feeling and sound shows up. Otherwise the noise level is slightly above average but still very tolerable.

My fuel economy doesn't seem to have been affected much, before the tires I would average 19 MPG in the city and that doesn't seem to have changed. Old highway MPG was an average of 24-26 and now it's a more constant 24

Going over bumps and road imperfections is much more pleasant with the shorter sidewalled tire; the impact doesn't seem to "resonate" within the tire sidewall as much and the effect of the impact is over and done with much sooner. The overall effect of going over a rough road seems lessened by a small factor compared with my old tires, perhaps 20%.

The hydroplaning resistance is also much better than my old tires. A good sized 1-2" deep puddle on the right side only at about 30 MPH is a common encounter of mine. With the old tires the steering wheel would pull to the right as I drove through it and the car would lurch as it forced its way through. The Wide Ovals - even though 20% wider - plow through in a much more effortless fashion. I notice no steering wheel pull and the "lurch" effect on the car is gone. I have yet to evaluate high speed hydroplaning resistance, however I am confident they will do very well based on these experiences.

On wet roads they perform admirably. I can't go into too much detail here however because I don't try to find the limits of my car on wet roads. I have noticed less slipping overall, but I can't comment on how they would respond to the aggressive side of driving they experience with the dry weather.

For $155 a tire, I certainly recommend these to anyone looking for a high performance, road gripping tire that won't break the bank.

I second that, firehawks wide oval, the best tire i've ever had and will go back to buying another set in the fall season, love it!!!!!unbelievable performance for both dry and wet driving. Here in No.Cal, I call these tires my all season tires, since the area i live in we dont get snow, so this the tire to have for this climate!!!!!

Very good drag radials, these tires are a new design available as of early 2010. I recently ran my best 1/4 mile of 11.77 at 113.62 on them and they're capable of much more.

I run these tires at 15 psi; 1.6 and 1.7 second 60' times are the norm with these tires on my car.

Yes, I would highly recommend them.

*If you want these tires for a 17" rim 275/40 R17 is your size.

If you're interested in reading more MM & FF magazine did a review of these tires in a 315 size back in March of 2010, story below.

The numbers in the comparison article are a little askew because the baseline runs for the article were made on 275/40/17 NT555R drag radials compared to the NT05R's in a 315 size.

What was the longest lasting 17" tire you've had?

For me it was Kumho Ecsta 711 in 245/45/17 size.

They are hard as a rock, no grip off the line, loud, fairly good wet traction due to large water channels and they lasted me 30,000mi which is something that has not happened since I had 15's. It was 30,000mi of "easy" driving.

BFGoodrich Radial T/A's are great for treadwear, but I want something one up from those in the handling department. I have a set of 225/70/15 on the 96 and it is real easy to slide that car around. (im quite good at it now...)


I'm about to buy tires. Right now I've got a set of maypops on there.
I have 16" 96 sport wheels and 17" cobra r's. I have the option of the either wheel set.

I'm thinkin of doing some paint work on the 16's with charcoal or gunmetal.

The Ecsta 711 is a discontinued model.

You do know there's a serious trade off in performance for longevity? Sliding the car around is something you generally do not want to do.

Why didn't you put this in the tire review thread?

If you're looking for recommendations - In my experience - go with Sumitomo HTR Z III, Nitto NT555 or Nitto NT05.

Well, it figures the best wearing 17" tire out would be discontinued. It seems like tire companies are making tires burn off quicker, or maybe I'm driving a little harder... hmmm

I'm not tokyo drifting this thing and I thank you for your concern trunk monkey do not worry though, please. They are small controlled slides, off of the public roads. There is a nice abandoned warehouse district by my house with wide open, freshly paved roads and clean fill/grass on either side.

I recommend BFG G-Force Sports. 255/50ZR/16 $121 each. 1 out of 10 rating by Tirerack "8"

I had them in 16 and am going to buy them in 17 real soon.

To the Tires, Kumho Ecsta 711 --- Never again, had them 2 times
then, Fulda.......... ----- No go, wear out to fast
then, Sumitomo HTR Z II ----- Good Tires, stick like glue here, never had the Sumitomo HTR Z III, but from the look of the Profile cut, I would chose the Suitomo HTR Z II befor the III
then, Nexen N3000 ----- Good and longlasting Tire, just brakes out to fast in tight turns(may be me, lol).
All 235/45/17, I could borrow you the Nexen or the HTR Z II for a test run, still have some threat left on them (Not to burn em up, need them for 2-3 more months).

Regarding this very hard to find tire size...

I'm trying to decide between the BF Goodrich g-Force Sport and the Falken Ziex ZE-512

the BFG are 127.77 and the Falkens are 97.00. Are the BFG's worth the extra cost? I'd really like to get a set that lasts! I had the Falkens before and they didn't last as well as I'd hoped, (Yes, I realize that I am a (ahem...) "Spirited" driver..) But if the BFG's wear out just as fast I might as well go with the Falkens. Anyone had any experience with the tires?

Edit: oh, and just for kicks and giggles... Whats the narrowest tire that can safely be mounted on a 16" SC wheel?

I wouldn't go any narrower than a 195 on a 7" wheel.

255/50-16 is getting hard to find. I have had 2-3 sets of the Falken ZE-512 in that size. The tread rating on the G-Force is less than the Falkens, so I don't think they will last any longer. The only G-Forces I found in that size were also summer tires.

The 255/50 is a mid 80's Corvette size and is on its way out. The ZE-512 is also an old tire, replaced by the ZE-912 which does not come in 255/50. I went to 235/55-16 as they are the same diameter as 255/50. There are more choices there and it really fits the 7 inch rim better. I would sometimes bottom out with 245/50-16 and the small amount larger diameter of the 255/50 made a difference.

They will cost less and other than the wear I just mentioned weren't bad tires. With a little more care on my part I'm sure they could be made to last longer.

Douglas brand tires from Walmart

I've never run the Douglas tires before, but there was already a practically new set on the Lincoln 10-spoke wheels I put on my 'Bird. Here's the lowdown:

Size - P225/60R16

Brand and Model - Douglas Touring

Approximate Price Paid - Free, but retails for around $80 or $90 ea.

Mileage so far on the tires - Total unknown, but I've put about 2000 mi. on them

Dry Traction on a scale of 1-10 - 5

Wet Traction on a scale of 1-10 - Not much experience on wet roads yet

Snow Traction on a scale of 1-10 - Hellooo, Florida!

The ride is much rougher than when I had the fanblade rims (I had Coopers on them). These also have a tendency to "wander" quite a bit. I had them rebalanced when I turned the whitewalls inside and it didn't make much of a difference. The guy at the tire shop even commented that these weren't the "roundest" tires he's ever seen. However, the miser in me just can't come to getting rid of them until they're worn out!

Bottom line: I cannot recommend Douglas tires at all.

As an aside, several years ago I bought a set of Goodyears from Walmart for a Ford Escort. The tires were fine, but the service from the Evil Empire was horrible. They were quick to install the tires (I was in and out in under 45 minutes) but to get them rotated or a flat fixed was always a "2 to 3 hour wait". Even when the service bays were empty! When I asked for a refund of the extra 40 bucks I'd paid for their extended service plan (free flat repairs, rotations, etc.) they said I would only receive 44 cents per tire because that was the cash value of the plan. What a crock! I have never gone back to Walmart's auto service and never will (they usually don't know what they're doing, anyway.)

Additional Comments: got these tires on an 06 XJ8L Jaguar for about six months now and very impressed, specially in the rain. the outer walls are really beafy, i compaired them to the continental tires DWS which are rated very highly but they are out of stock in most area's. but if you look at the side walls, the DWS are build like the pirelli pzero nero, but the A/S are more stockier/beefier so they dont roll as much when your taking turns. compare them.


Overall,
If money is not an issue, go with the Michelin Pilot A/s or the Continental DWS. If your on a bugget, go with the Firehawk wide ovals. If you want to go cheap, dont go with either the Kumho's or the BF's listed above. Happy hunting

First thing; old worn out tires were Continental Sporticontacts. Brand new Kuhmo's sound like mud tires compared to the old ones. However I think the continentals were so worn that the shoulder was softer than it should have been...

Rated for 30k miles. So far grip seems good. Only slippage I had was when the mold release compound was still on the tires and it was raining... They look pretty cool too with an agressive tread pattern.

Got these on the car as fast as i could due to the tires on it being from 2002. I did the research on these tires before I bought them, they are number 3 in the category of Standard Touring tires on Tire Rack, but they also cost less than the top 2. (this was at the time, Continental recently introduced a new tire that went to #1, knocking the Altimax RT43 down to #2, the Firestone Precision Touring to #3, and The Dunlop down to #4) I went with the dunlop due to wanting a US made tire (the Altimax is made in the Czech Republic or Brazil) and wanting a T Rated tire (the Firestone is made in the USA or Costa Rica, but is only in S Rated).

Onto the tire itself:

Looks: 7/10, decent sidewall look, tread pattern looks somewhat aggressive. Very large MADE IN USA on the side, for those of us who care about stuff like that.

Snow handling: Very VERY grippy in slush/freezing rain with snow already on the ground. Trial by fire on the weekend after i bought the car

Dry Handling: Fairly grippy, will be pushing the limits of it once it warms up, but it doesn't feel like it would be really sloppy, maybe not as grippy as let's say a Cooper CS4 or BF Goodrich Advantage T/A, but at the price point I cannot complain

Noise: fairly quiet, not as quiet as the 2002 Michelin Rainmaster MX4 tires that were on it

Tire Shop Experience: Excellent, no pressure since I bought them online and they got me in several hours early and got me out quick.

Awesome tires for the money. My setup is difficult as hell in the snow and without being dedicated snow/winter tires, they do very well. I have not had a chance to push them hard in the corners yet, but I have been able to test them out in the snow since we have about 1-2 inches on the ground right now.

Additional Comments including whether you recommend them or not.: I do recommend these tires. They look very agressive, ride and handle well, are surprisingly quiet, and cope reasonably well with the torque of my big bore. There is a lot of tread left, but I will replace them this year due to their age. Will probably stick with NT555s, although I am thinking about changing to 18" wheels.

The tire I use is the cooper zeon rs3a. 245/45/18 94w. This tire is not for the winter but a great handling and trac tire in the summer. They are a little expensive. They were $650 with mounting and balancing.

Really smoothed the ride and increased handling capabilities quite a bit.
Dry traction 9
Wet traction 8.5 (haven't ever lost traction even pushing my luck a lil bit.
Stopping distance was decreased by nearly half. Also it makes or a pretty quite ride even at high speeds. You'll hear the wind on the car before the road noise. I'd recommend to anyone plus you can't go wrong with 90k warranty :p
