LIGHTEVERGREENFROST, those are the ones I was thinking of. I was thinkiking it was the Trans Am series. I saw the Whistler cars back in '91 and was pretty sure that Roush was the owner.

Now I remember where I saw the racing cougars, forgot all about that site. If Ford had any brains they could have tried marketing the Cougar with the racing image, but wait, that would have been a good business decision.

But do they say it's the last MN12 or just the last Tbird?

You would think a Bird would get all the glory of being the last off the line but from what I understand the last bird was a subdued affair and Ford didn't seem to care much about these cars in the end.

Short of Ford and the employees who were there who knows if they shuffled the schedule around to make sure the last one of the line was a bird...

the employees at the Lorain plant did a little last hurrah type deal with the last car and the tribal elder of the plant.

If you stripped the last bird down I wonder what little stuff from employees you'd find stuck throughout it here and there...

Theres got to be stuff hidden in the car, stuff written on it etc. they knew it was the last one...

Well the MN12 was getting pretty long in the tooth by 1997, I can see why they gave it the axe I just hate that they didn't desgn an even better 2 door RWD platform to carry on with.

The Cougar and Tbird had already evolved into the "2 dr luxo boat coupe" class of vehicles before the MN12 came along so real performance never was the target customer base in Ford's eyes, luxury and confort always trumped sportyness and performance in the end... They would do some TC's & SC's and sports but that was just an extra little thing to pick up a few more customers and ad to the image of the car.

Most Cougars I see anymore are grocery getters driven by middle age women, "Cougars" LOL...

Kind of ironic it ended up being the NASCAR ford of choice...

Actually at one time both my Mom and Dad drove Cougars. They were two of the very FEW cars he bought brand new. He bought a Beautiful Blue 78 XR7 for himself, and a 78 Silver 4-door cougar for my Mom. Those were the years (77-79) that they actually built 4-door Cougars. He's always been T-bird crazy, though for a while in the early 70's he drove Marks.

I really like the earlier Cougars more than the early Thunderbirds. My dad used to have a '71 XR7 with a 4V 351C. It put down a little over 500RWHP, what's not to like about that?

I would happily drive either of those cars. A 302 and C4 will bolt right into that fox bodied wagon. I have a friend with one that he dropped a 302 into with 4.10s and an AOD. It's a pretty quick grocery getter.
Little known fact(?): 1982 was the only year of the fox Cougar wagon.

And that was one year too many IMO.

I don't have a problem with those cars so much as the fact the Cougar nameplate had to endure the indignity of going to four doors and then a wagon body style!

At least the little FWD gurly-man Cougars remained true to the 2 door coupe body style...

The 67-71 Thunderbirds had 4 doors too, the back 2 were suicide. We never had a wagon though.

Yea I know, they were decided un-thunderbird like IMO. Thankfully the Cougar was a variant of the Mustang platform back when it came out in 67'.

I thought they where going to bring the Tbird back as a four door luxo performance sedan rather them the 2 door retro bird it became. That seems to be where the sales volume is these days...

I wouldn't mind seeing the Cougar returning to the current Mustang platform with some new sheet metal and a different dashboard...

Merc needs a 2 door RWD coupe in the lineup IMO...

Found this while researching the GM80 program (FWD Camaro/Firebird):

"This was all that radical an idea as it is today since Ford had seriously toying with the idea of replacing the Mustang with the car that eventually became the Probe. Also in another lesser known project Ford even considered moving their big coupes, the Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar, to the new in 1986 Taurus platform. That changed once they decided to sink $1 billion into making a world class RWD chassis to replace the Fox platform, which became the MN-12. The MN-12 was envisioned to not only include the T-bird and Cougar, but also various Lincolns, the Mustang, and was even engineered to Australian standards for possible export! It was this over engineering that destroyed the program, making it too heavy to replace the Mustang and too costly to export overseas. The MN-12 platform thus never achieved it's multi-carline intentions and was largely a financial mistake for Ford.. "

The speed limiter could be a little known fact. I belive its 106 for the V8's, or at least the 4.6's. Which is too fast anyway.

105 mph, been there, done that...what do you mean to fast?

Heres an old Ward's Auto World article from Oct. 88' describing the new MN-12 that's about to go into production.

I think my 89' was Nov 88 production, I forget, it was # 5,562.

It's 105 on 4.6's

IIRC, the limiter depended on a couple of things:
gears
engine
year
transmission
a couple other factors?
