I had the same issues, and it turned out to be a defective cable modem

It was a Motorola Surfboard 5200 that I replaced with a Scientific Atlanta which has worked perfect ever since.

I've had nothing but trouble with Motorola's modems... Be it cable or DSL.

I'm feeling extra Comcastic this evening! Came home to find all TV channels frozen except one local channel. Internet was down as well. Called in and was prompted that there is a large service outage in my area. So I got on the list to get a call back once service is restored. Yeah, here I am back online and TV service is back and they're still calling me back to let me know service is back on. I bet the friggin' phone will ring in the middle of the night.
It's amazing how little there is to do when the weather sucks in this little town.
So while in rant mode I might as well mention that ever since the switch to digital, the sound has been dropping out.
Yup, stuck with cable... and it's Comcastic!

Slightly Jerryfied...

I had a Scientific Atlanta, but I replaced it with a Surfboard 5105. It's still doing the same thing. They got a tech comin to look at the install outside (The original tech had to run an entire new wire) so I think it might be a connection issue outside.

I have to occasionally download terabyte sized files for work stuff; our work network is so stuffed the only way to do that is a secure tunnel out to someone outside the network...

I got to use a link from a local university straight into a German university over the High-speed link, and got a 2.3TB file downloaded into a university server in a few minutes. It still took all day to transfer it the last 10 miles, lol.

I'm going to buy some external raid arrays, and drive there next time.

I'm a cox tech we use our speed test site when on trouble calls and installs since we only gaurentee advertised speeds off the back of the modem, on our network. we've been testing speeds upwards of 30mb average (not including the "power boost")in a few areas across the country so if your wallet's deep enough get ready . The "power boost" is great though for downloading large files, webpages, speed tests, etc. opens up the bandwith until the file is done or website is up. We have a program called EdgeHealth that takes a stamp of your modem every two hours and archives it showing the signal Rx, Tx, MER, Errors, etc. has more info on the status of your modem than the 192.168.100.1 modem diagnostic website will show you, so if you do have issues we can go back up to 30 days to watch what's going on. Cool stuff

I feel extra comcastic when their G-D DVR spins up in the middle of the night and sounds like a freakin sack of marbles in a blender. My favorite is when I turn the power off and the disk spins down for 5 seconds, and then immediately spins back up and starts doing whatever it does (maintenance? Getting new guide info? Whatever, it's loud as hell.)

I basically hate Comcast. I have Qwest DSL and it's pretty cheap for the reliable service, but I hate those jerks too.

Eh.

UVerse 1.5 up/ 1.0 down.

Want to upgrade a few packages higher, but can't really justify it. The only time it's an issue is when I've got a torrent going.

I guess I've got this going for me:

Qwest cheapest service, but mom is paying the bill. I should cancel my DVR and see if they can upgrade the internet. I can still play XBox live, but no wonder I have problems. Still, iPod Touch downloads through my wireless network are better than anyone else I've used around here.

I've heard a lot of people talk about Comcast with XBox live.

Looks like Google wants to dip there toes in the ISP business, I can't imagine them becoming an ISP on a national level.
