As far as handling goes....I'd say comparable, not superior to a Mustang. Their shorter wheel base and lighter weight even things out when comparing our IRS platform to their solid axle one. Not to mention you're comparing a dropped MN12, to a stock Stang. Drop that Stang a little and you'll see them come out on top, I'm afraid. Some of these answers are a little funny, but I guess us MN12 guys love our cars. As a past and present owner of both Fox based Mustangs and MN12’s I’d say some of the comments listed are a little bias. But hey, what do you expect, this is after all a Thunderbird/Cougar board. Aside from that, you forgot to mention we've got a far better riding car than them. Although the looks are subjective, there's no denying that the MN12 is all around a much better riding and more comfortable platform.

I kinda consider a MN12 cross between a Lincoln and a Mustang..

Basiclly it has a plushness of a Lincoln (Roomy and Nice ride down the freeway and such)
and of a mustang, since it does handle pretty well and has some go to it and can be fun to drive

Too me thou you can't have handling and ride comfort.. you have to sacifice one to get the other.. Same as HP VS gas milage

But i agree.. a Mustang with the same suspension mods would walk on a mn12, BUT for what it's worth.. and MN12 handles pretty damn good.. Heck i know i can take corners with my '91 at 3 times the posted speed without a problem..

You know you have a 5.0 Bird when...

“It’s not worth it” is the most common phrase you hear among your friends.

The guys at the drags think you might be serious competition until they see you have a AOD.

Your girlfriend thinks you should sell it and get the mustang instead.

When even the Ford fans are poking fun at you.

...and last but not least...When all you hard work finally pays off and you smoke a SRT-4! (And not tell anyone that he just didn’t know how to drive)

lol Just read this entire thread.

I never realized that the stock 5.0 Birds were that slow compared to the 4.6. Never had a chance to drive the early 90's birds with the V8.

This has been enlightening.

...when you have people comeing up and asking how long it took you to put the 5.0 in the car.

...when your at a light and people are asking how you made a v6 sound like that.

...when you go to the drags and blow away every ricer there with your stock car.

...when the damn exhost shop you go to says "no we cant do dual exhost and no you cant fit anything larger than a 2 1/4" pipe in the well." and they end up ripping you off and put 1 3/4" pipe in the back.

...when the first thing you thought of doing when you found out your car had the 5.0 was a flomaster exhost.

... you order 5.0 Mustang parts and some of them don't fit

... a bfh is the only way to make some of those Mustang parts fit

... you wish you could afford a budget 393 buildup

... do all the bolt-ons that make a Mustang run 13.9 and all you muster is a 14.70

... the tech guy at the track doesn't want to look under the hood

... the car overheats until installing a bigger radiator and e-fan.

... the guy at the dealer parts counter tells you half the parts you want are obsolete but they have 1 left halfway across the country

... you do all of the above and the motor runs like brand new after 135k miles

... you are as comfortable or more so in your driver seat as in the living room

Now I want to go for a cruise and turn on my cold a/c... this computer chair sucks!

Had to buy an alloy Romac balancer since the stock replacement was wobbling a month later. Stock 50 oz. balancers hate 5500 rpms.

Brazed new ends on my a/c lines and crimped a new hose on because nobody could get me one already made.

3 in. long p/s tubes cost $80 and took 3 days to get.

ect...

My tbird has about $2500 in it now and it would take at least 10k before I thought about selling. These cars require a labor of love. Each modified tbird is unique. Something about that car.... I've had faster cars and nicer cars but the tbird is my favorite. Never even liked them before owning one since I'm a mechanic [I actually hated mn12's due to bad experience with trying to fix vibrations]. Funny how the almost free car won me over.

Ended up cruising over to a friends house and helping move a shed...that sucked. Then he wanted to go riding dirtbikes but I didn't want to drive my car at the river or leave it in front of his house. So I'm home again.

I'd be at the lake fishing but don't feel like driving the truck Hmmm that would look funky - a tbird hauling a boat

Anyone know a good shrink to make me forget how great my tbird is? lol j/k

... every passenger who feels the pedal hit the floor says "holy sh**"

One I made up myself...

you know you own a 5.0 T-Bird when a Civic passes you on the highway, and you think "I would show you what a real car is...if only I had more gas."

I was movin' down the road in my V8 Ford...

You know you have a 5.0 bird when....

You spend more time figuring out how to install parts, than decide which ones to buy.
When you get headers to fit with almost no real work
When you post on a "You know you have a 5.0 thread"
When every ounce of your time with the car is a pleasure a mustang guy wants to have
When you make the car fast because you love it, not because you can
When you are willing to do things most car guys would only have nightmares about to just go a little bit faster.
When your 302 is actually a 347 and no one knows it.
WHen you acccept that ford forgot they made a 5.0 T-Bird/Coug

I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defeend, to the death, your right to say it.
