Can someone learn me about flat screen tvs?

I am looking into a new tv and don't know what to buy. I was thinking of getting full HD, but read somewhere that if you are going less than 50", most people can't tell a difference between 720p and 1080p. I don't believe I want/need more than 42" or so. I think I want LCD, but not convinced. I just want opinions and experiences you all have had with flat screen/ HDTVs. Any suggestions to push me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

I am tired of hearing the extra noise that the old crt I have (that my parent's gave me when they got a new one) makes.

here is my own opinion so take it as that....

If it has a chance for sunlite to hit it for instance with a window oppisate the tv go LCD.

Go Plasma if its in a dark room with not alot of back lighting.

720p Vs1080p

Comcast only sends a 720p so I went with a 720p TV

go 1080 if you are buying a blueray or HD player. (PS3)

I have a 40 inch LCD (viewsonic) and I love it it is a 720p and I have wall mounted it.

You can get a decent 40 inch for around 1200.. (depending on connections you want IE HDMI, VGA, Component)

I have a Olevia 23" Widescreen LCD tv, Its a true 720p but supports 1080i, I am very happy with it. My XBOX-360 looks AWESOME in 1080i, I don't see how I ever lived without it. I bought mine from www.newegg.com for $300 refurbished.

If you got some real coin, go for the ne OLED tvs Sony is bringing to the US. Can be as thin as half of an inch.

Ive got a 32" Olevia. Its an LCD 720p. I have a PS3 and play games and watch blu-ray. I have a pretty bright room and LCD doesnt glare at all. HDTV looks good too, i just get the local OTA channels right now, looking into dish soon.

I would suggest a DLP tv, that is as long as you don't want to hang your tv on the wall. From what I've seen and what I've read, the DLP will have a better picture then LCD or Plasma. The only drawback is the side viewing angle, if you watch it from a side instead of the front you will see some fading. As for 720p vs 1080p most of the tv's that are being made will have 1080p (that's 32"+) and difference upclose can be seen. If you sit 5ft away from a 40" tv you probably won't be able to tell a difference. Personally when I save enough money, I will be buying a Sony Bravia A-series SXRD DLP 55". I like the features and you can buy it for about $1,400 shipped to your door.

They are phasing out alot of the older Bravia engines right now, so you can buy them for a steal right now.

Saying "flat screen" will get you flogged in the AV hobbyist world. All the TVs out right now are flat screen... It's like saying you want a car with 4 wheels.

I have a 50" Sony SXRD 1080p, which, without going into the nitty gritty details, is a hybrid of DLP and LCD and uses the best of both.

Watching Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs on this thing is amazing! Since you have a PS3, having a 1080p would allow you to make full use of your console.

If you cheese out and get an el-cheapo TV, you will notice things like bad black levels, poor contrast ratio, flat colors, etc. One of my biggest pet peeves about cheap TVs is the ones where the black "glows" when looking at it from any angle than straight on. And some of the worst ones glow no matter what angle you are looking at. What I mean by glow is when you look at a black part of the screen, it will look like it is lit up instead of dark. It will still look black, but a glowing black and that is a really good sign of poor picture. I couldn't personally justify saving a few hundred bucks on something inferior, so don't cheese out!

DLP hands down. When I worked in Home Theater at Best Buy, this was a newer technology. Since, it has actually outpreformed LCD and Plasma. The advantage those two have is thinner, and able to hang on a wall. If you go DLP stick with Samsung or Toshiba. Samsung made the 1st DLP and owns the market for them, and have perfected it. Toshiba's are 2nd and are absolutely gorgeous! If you arent looking to mount on a wall, save the $$$ and go DLP, it's the future of TV.

Samsung does have some sweet new LED DLP's, my frined has a 56" LED DLP and the picture is awesome. He did experience a problem with it the first week he got it. The LED module burned out on it and they couldn't get a new module for some ridicoulos time so he ended up getting a new one from the store he bought it at (exchanged it). I was reading reviews at Amazon about this specific TV and seems like there is quite a few people with same issue....I thought LEDs last a lifetime.....

the newer DLP tv's from samsung have a comparable contrast ratio to plasma's finally.. they used to be 2500:1, now they are 10,000:1

however.. most of your decent plasma tv's are pushing 15,000:1, with some of the higher end pushing 25,000 or even 30,000 to 1

my DLP set looks a lot better than most LCDs i've seen.. but the pioneer plasma's i've seen makes my tv look like sh!t.. and i'm a hardcore samsung DLP fan..

my samsung has just been authorized for replacement... so i'm probably goin for a 50" insignia 720P plasma unit

as far as 720p to 1080p.. like thunderterd said... most digital TV content is only recorded in 720p, then upscaled to 1080i.. most hdtv's can do 1080i.. content for 1080p won't be out for a while.. unless you go blueray or hddvd

and yes.. i CAN tell the difference between the two, and no i don't have to be up close.. the differences are subtle.. yet annoying lol

I also have sony's SXRD LCD projection (LCoS), which uses three mirrors, not thousands. Mine is a 1080p set and looks great with the HD DVD player on my Xbox.

Bingo
I'll add myself to the list of Samsung DLP supporters. Myself and my friend each have a 56" Samsung 1080p DLP, and my other friend has the 50" version. Thrilled with the television, and no problems of any kind with any of the three thus far.

No problem, I also forgot to mention that the Olevia 323V TV that I have also has a VGA port on the back so you can use it as a computer monitor as well. It IS worth the money I paid for it, But you might want to get a Surround Sound system if you want the full effect.

ahhh..thats why I love blackfriday. I wait to buy all my electronics then. I got the Aquos 46 720 for 899. And I LOVE IT...the picture is amazing. However, If you do not have HD service, it is prob. not worth it. LCD's are dropping!!! In the next year, they are predicting them to be 35-45% cheaper than what they are now. There are too many players in the field and technology is on the rise. So it all depends on how bad you want it now.

There are now Laser TV's coming out sometime.. LCD's only display around 30% of all the colors that the human eye can see, And Laser TV's show 90% or something.. They will probably cost as much as a Shelby GT 500.
