5.0 timing
I think my timing might be off. A couple of years ago I had my timing changed to 14BTDC. These days when I put my foot into it on the highway it sounds kind of like a diesel, also when I go up a long hill if I don't kick it down a gear it will seam to miss. I always run Sunoco 94, so does this sound like a timing issue.
Thanks Tom |

not usually, 4 degress is safe with 94 octane
probably the pcv screen thats clogged up, its on the back of the intake manifold beneath the cowl closer to the driver side but pretty much center in the back. Pull put the pcv valve and you'll need some tweezers or the like to remove the screen. I just removed mine and tossed it, that made me realize how nice my old 5.0 could idle, even though prior to that it idle'd as i thought beautifully

If there are large particles in the lifter valley, your engine is about to die anyway and the PCV system is the least of your worries. If you clean it and put it back, it can just get clogged up again. I would also just throw it away.

Well certainly nothing big enough to damage your valvetrain is going to make it through the PCV valve. At worst you could say that something could get in there and make you have to replace the PCV valve, but it won't damage the engine. Also, if you have sludge, you don't change your oil frequently enough. There should not be any sludge, grit, or gunk, anywhere in the oiling system. If there were sludge in the valley, it would cause one of 2 things, either it would drip down and clog up the oil pump pickup and you would lose oil pressure, or it would block the passages and oil would not be able to drain back to the pan, and you would lose oil pressure. Like I said, if there are any particles in the valley large enough to be filtered out by that screen, then your motor has other issues and a PCV valve is the least of your worries. Now as for the screen, I have seen many 5.0s with that screen gummed up causing the PCV system not to work properly, and I have seen many 5.0s with that screen removed that have never had any issue. I have never seen one motor where it sucked something up through the PCV valve and damaged the valvetrain. That simply does not happen.

Please don't just throw it out. You will just be sucking oil into your your engine. Replace it instead. That screen acts as a filter and oil seperator.

its a screen not a filter, as stated it can do more harm than good
if it clogs and the pcv can't evacuate excessive crankcase pressure your rings will wear more and thus cause more engine wear than needed. do your engine a favor and chunk it, its a bad design just like ford does with many things. I'm sure if it was that important they wouldn't have eliminated that screen in the 95+ 5.0 explorers and 351 equipped f series trucks |
