check out the plastic grommet on TV cable. it is hooked up to the throttle linkage.
if it is broken, your trans is running too low of p[ressure and WILL BURN UP, if it hasn't already.

it goes from the throttle body to the trans.
the grommet i am talkin about is on the throttle linkage. It is what connects the cable to the linkage.
it is a black plastic piece from factory, replacements are white or there is an updated brass bushing, and a clip design.

would this also cause the tranny to bring the engine tach up even without pressing the gas peddle (this made stopping a pain...)

no it shouldn't affect idle speed, unless it is getting between linkage and holding it open.
here is a pic of tv cable and loction......your intake will not look like mine but it should be cl;ose enough for you to get idea of location

#1 is the cable itself
#2 is where the cable connects to throtle body.(grommet)
hope this helps....
btw, if you have driven it like this for a while, you probably have done damage to your trans.......they will not last for 50 miles with the cable off.

sorry bout the bad news .

good luck,
Mike

all i can say is DON'T DRIVE IT!!
auto zone might sell the grommet, but again DON'T DRIVE YOUR CAR LIKE THAT IT WILL BURN UP TRANS!!!!!!!!!!
you might try callin local tranny shop, they usually have part in stock.

About 20,000 miles ago, i found my car revving like crazy in OD on the highway. There was no place to pull over so i continued on 50 miles to where i lived. I get home and find the cable hanging there. I get a new gromet from pep boys and use a cotter pin around the post to secure the cable. Works very well. Ford sells a metal replacement clip that will prevent it from ever popping off again

Because the grommets dry out and get loose. The FIRST thing I did with my new trans was to replace that crap with the brass bushing and pin.

well put a new ford replacement grommet in cost $1... good enough till I work up the engine. And also changed out the headlight switch since that damn thing went last night... if anyone's wondering... quick replacement and good investment... IT REALLY SUCKS when your driving down a road and all of a sudden your headlights go out.
