Need new Hydro-boost ....

The hydro boost/ hydraulic power booster on my '89 SC went out. Does anybody know where to get a new one for cheap? I can get one locally for about $100, $150 with a new master cylinder...just seeing if anyone knows if I can get it any cheaper somewhere else of if this is about as good as I can get on price.

Trying to keep cost down as much as possible....gotta replace rear wheel bearings and one axel (driver side) on my F-150 also....

The only "new" master cylinders I have ever seen are remanufactured and cost about $600. Most parts stores can't get any brake master cylinder parts for the Teves sytem on the 89-92. Do you need just the accumulator ball or the complete master cylinder? I have a low mile complete unit if your interested.

Just the hydraulic power booster. My brakes works....just no power assist. Debating on replacing master cylindar while I'm in there...just so I don't have to worry about that going bad too. You wouldn't happen to be in Ottawa ....in Putnam Co. Would ya??

What brake lights are on? If you have brakes and its really hard to stop the accumulator needs replaced. Yes I live there, I'll send you a PM.

Have a few friends that live up around there. The dash brake light would come on and go right out if you stepped on the brake pedal quickly when I first got the car. Then one day,after haveing the car as a daily driver for a year, when I let my father -in- law drive it while I was working on his car, the pedal got really stiff and he had a hard time stopping. I picked it back up and the pedal was really stiff, had to ues both feet to stop her and now dash light stays on all the time. And the brakes work, just have to use alot of force on the pedal to get the SC to stop. Based on past experience, pretty much figured the booster was bad. Never worked on a car with a hydraulic booster before so this is all new territory for me.
BTW.........my SC is not eqipped with ABS.

Has someone done a conversion to your SC? The Teves system with ABS was standard on the SC, I have never heard or seen one without ABS.

I'm not sure what and / or if anything was done to the SC. All I do know is I don't have an ABS light (or at least it's not on) and when I drove it last winter ('08 - '09) when I hit the breaks after the first reall snow fall, the tires locked up and I slide forever before she stopped with no ABS brake pedal pulse or sounds.

Slowride,

Do the 89's have the ABS system that you can get the code from???? Using the code reader for the computer???

If so, you need to get the code readout and look it up in the PC/ED manual.

It worked on my 92.......but not sure about 89.

Think so, but not sure. Don't have a working scanner right now and can't afford a new one so I can't get it scanned as of right now.

Update on the brakes: Had to move the SC last Thursday and yestarday. Well, when I moved it last week...seemed like I had brakes again. So I drove it around the block and they seem to work (power assisted)...but my red brake light still came on for a second when I stepped on the pedal and then went right out, did it yestarday too. Why would I have brakes (power assisted), then no power assist, and then power assist again??

In a 92 Crown Vic, I had a similar problem. Code reader pointed to right rear sensor..... However problem was very intermittent! Troubleshooting with ohm meter showed no issues with link........

I replaced expensive master cylinder..... no change.

Later, after getting very frustrated.....was laying under the car looking at things, and happened to move the ABS sensor wire. It was then that I noticed a rub mark on it through to the conductor....wiring was laying on a sharp edge of the chassis! Moved the wire and the problem stopped! Replaced worn wiring later when I found another car in the wrecking yard with ABS for about $3. Master cylinder was over $200.....or something like that...long time ago!

Anyway, just one of those cheap "beep beep beep" code readers is all you need...... also, check the shop manual and see if there is a way to make a dash light blink or something.....other than a code reader!
