Best Gear selection

I have a 95SC 5 speed. I was thinking about a ring and pinion change and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. I was thinking about 3.73's and wanted to know if they were to steep for daily driving. Also if you have done this swap, what do I need to look for specifically i.e. splines etc. Will mustang gears work?

Better than Before

I get about 250 miles per fill up I guess if I push it on Empty I might get 260-270 miles with 4.10's.
It used to be 300 miles. I love the gearing but you do need a Drive shaft and converter change to handle the RPM's on the freeway.Thats if you go past 80mph!

My Pumpkin is from a 99 cobra because you need the 28 spline count that is found on the 99 cobra.

It depends on the gear ratios in the trans and where your shifting, anything higher than 3.27 makes first gear effectively useless in an M5R2 on an SC.

I have 3.55's in my '95 SC now, but that only because I drag race it. IMHO the best gear choice for the street in a stock/mildly modified '94 or '95 SC is 3.27's. Due to the different transmission ratios, 3.08's are a better choice for the '89 to '93 SC's.

And I've tried 2.73's, 3.08's, 3.27's, and now 3.55's over the years.

I believe the determining factor is the manual transmission.

it's because the 4.6 is a dog in the low end+the gear ratio's in the 5 speed's first gear is really low.
then you add the blower there is no need for any steeper than the stock or 3:27 IN THE 5SPD

I've heard stories about how the 3.08 gears yield a nice balance between torque improvements and reducing the effectiveness of 1st gear.

I aim to try this as soon as I can find a source for the gears.

I had 3.27's in my 90 SC 5 speed and it was sweet! The guy I bought my 3.73 gears from for my Auto had it in his 5 speed and actually lost ET in the 1/4 mile over the 3.27's he had becuase the gears were to short and he had an extra shift before he crossed the line.

Listen to Niebert. Anything more than 3.27's and first gear is useless. This is a 3.8SC stick fella's, not a 4.6 auto....

Mods: The usual stuff... 3.73 Gears, J-mod, catless mandrel 2.5" true duals, Marauder Converter, Eibachs, Xcal2 and Phoenix Gold Audio, chrome 18's, etc. etc..

I know this doesn't apply to the original question, but I was doing some comparisons between a 4R70W and T45 gear ratio vs rear end gear vs final drive ratio in each gear (and rpm at 75 mph)

(Sorry, but I don't know how to insert this as a table)

4R70W (245 50 17)(26.64”)

Transmission ratios:
First: 2.84
Second: 1.55
Third: 1.00
Fourth: 0.70
RPM @ 75 MPH
3.27 9.29 5.07 3.27 2.29 2165
3.73 10.59 5.78 3.73 2.61 2470

T45 (245 50 17)(26.64”)

Transmission ratios:
First: 3.37
Second: 1.99
Third: 1.33
Fourth: 1.00
Fifth: 0.67
RPM @ 75 MPH
2.73 9.20 5.43 3.63 2.73 1.83 1730
3.08 10.38 6.13 4.10 3.08 2.06 1952
3.27 11.02 6.50 4.35 3.27 2.19 2072
3.55 11.96 7.06 4.72 3.55 2.38 2250
3.73 12.57 7.42 4.96 3.73 2.50 2364

And why I posted this:
http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?t=131569

Just thought I would add that so people can see one way to compare how their car will change based on a gear ratio change or transmission change.

97 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC (Chip'd, 3.73 T/L... so far... )
97 Ford Aspire (Slow, but getting 36 mpg (f'n Ethenol!! )
84 F250 Dually w/6.9L Diesel (7.3L IDI pending)
73 Mercury Cougar Convertible w/351C 4V (Partially Restored)
69 F100 LWB w/460 Engine
76 Glastron Carlson 23' Jet Boat w/460 CJ Engine
