Built in phone buttons

I have a 95 SC daily driver that I'm slowly making a bit nicer. Has anyone done anything with the built in dash phone buttons? I'm taking a guess the tech is a bit to old do make it work with a phone anymore. I have the an orginal owners manual that just references an additional phone manual that I don't have, so not much help.

It's an analog cell phone, so there's no way to make it work without basically gutting it, and putting a new phone's guts inside.

It could be done, but...

Wow! The phone option. That's super rare. Pictures please!

I've been a member here for years and I've seen very little talk about the factory phone option. Not saying it doesn't exist here, just saying I can't remember reading much about it over the years.

Mods? Yea, I got mods ...

I've seen a few, I pulled the console phone modules harness and broken bezel from a 95 Cougar with the option a few years ago, and threw them in my collection. If your car has premium sound the plastic package tray the amplifier is(or was) mounted will have an unused diagonal rectangular slot that the car phone transceiver mounts to, as well as the tabs for the speaker interrupt module.

The buttons themselves are actually a repurposed from the digital dash buttons optional in the 89-93s, same mounting, even the same position on the dash. I actually wonder if there was some early intent to carry over the digital dash for 94,

Find an LX airbag, and swap them.

The SC one is rarer.

the stearing wheel is low on my list, I have replacement radio bezel sitting in my back seat and a custom dual exhaust kit on my garage floor, . I do want to check out why the keyless entry isn't getting power. doesn't light up or anything, I do get a light around the key hole thou.

The positioning of my fog light switch in the T-bird was actually inspired from the location of those buttons in the dash bezel.

As far as the phone option, every 93 Mark VIII I've driven (owned one, test drove and turned down another) as well as the 98 I now have had it installed. Only the 93 I didn't buy had the phone in the center console though.

As far as doing something with the buttons... only thing I could think of might be to have them wired into some kind of bluetooth module that your phone automatically connects to when you get in the car. Much easier than trying to directly integrate them into today's new phones, or trying to integrate one of today's phones directly into the system in the car.

It looks like a good place to mount a modern phone.

A modern phone, including my 03 flipphone, does bluetooth integration to almost any deck ,even the cheap ones.

We're not collectible enough to put up with the stock tape deck, at this point, lol.

whats to stop me from ripping the guts out of a blue tooth speaker, connecting the output to the "speaker bypass" on the amp and routing the power and possible volume thru the in dash phone buttons.

I'm feeling extra collectable today, being in the rust belt, I havnt seen any thunderbirds running around at all, let alone SC's, with the exception of car shows.

I have a fog light switch (by the auto/firm switch), the switch lights up, fog lights don't, havnt looked to see if they just need bulbs yet, its on my list

Was raining all day on my day off but at least I got that broken radio bezel trim replaced and actually screwed down. Was not only cracked in previous pic, but all the screw tabs were broken off. I suppose any progress is good, lol

If you really want to make the phone buttons work, consider taking it apart and wiring it to a BT speakerphone module.
That should be fairly straightforward and would allow you to mate the on-car BT speaker with any phone of your choosing.
You could even wire the speaker/microphone to the handheld headset. That wouldn't be legal to use in several places (like CA) since it's not "hands free" but you'd be ready for next year's Radwood.
