Where's my resonator?

I hear a lot of people starting their exhaust mods by removing the resonator. So, I went and looked, there isn't one. There are the 2 primary cats, the 2 into 1 3rd cat, but nothing else all the way back to the stock mufflers. The thing that gets me is, I bought the car from my stepdad and I KNOW he didn't have it removed. And the car is completely quite (except for the intake noise). Maybe mine didn't come with one

97 LX Sport Bird. Lots of suspension, loud stereo, good tires, and a heavy right foot.

The resonator is JUST behind the 3rd cat. On the 4.6L, it's a small resonator.

Yea, I don't think there ever was one. There is no evidence that it was cut out and a straight piece was put in it's place. Is this common?

thats because 96/97 4.6L birds never had one from the factory.

Ah ha. That is one bit of info I missed in my readings. Thanks for the help.
