Exhaust question

Ok so, after some serious searching, I've read a quite a bunch of the exhaust posts here, and frankly, my head is spinning.
Seems to kind of raise more questions for me than provide definitive answers... Naturally.... Everybodys looking for different results. Nevertheless, I come to the experienced for some insight....

Ive got a 96 lx sport. 4.6. Bone stock other than a K&N panel filter. I wanna upgrade the exhaust, naturally to achieve any/all performance gains, but, in all honesty, moreso to get the thing to actually SOUND like a v8.
I'm on a real tight budget, but I dont want to randomly chop out anything that will @#% me on the inspection ( I'm in NY ) so I'd prefer to keep the stock cats. Would a simple muffler change be enuff, or do I really have to go for a cat back system?? I wanna hear a REAL difference at idle and all the way thru, but I'm concerned about highway 'buzz'. Please!! 'splain me!! Help me out, guys!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!!

I have a pair of Thrush Turbo mufflers that I'm going to have put on. They were $23ea from Summit Racing.

There is someone here with this exact set up with a sound clip.

Ok, so thats a Bone Stock 97?? The original Muffs were replaced by the Thrush?? I'm trying to find a baseline on the sounds.... Even the soundclips I've found are a little vague.... Damn...there's so MANY amazing clips on basically stock setups, I dunno what to pick from yet... lol!!!
Thanks!!

His (Mister-T) is a 95 but it is all stock as far as I know.

DI/DO stands for dual inlet dual outlet. This means the muffler has two pipes going in and two pipes going out. Most mufflers have a single pipe in single pipe out.

With the DI/DO you have to remove the third catalytic converter. If you have smog or safety inspections you can not run a DI/DO.

IMO you will hate the Flowmtasters. The 40 series will drive you nuts due to the drone (constant buzzing sound) at cruising speeds.

I've heard that 'bout the Flowmasters on a basically stock system...
And I use this for everything, work, play, screwing around on the weekends.... So IMO, it seems in my present incarnation I may wanna stay with the Thrush Turbos... I DO like the price...lol.... I just wonder if theres' anyone out there thats grafted something that sounds as good onto the back of a stock system.....
Anyone??!??

Ihave turbo muffs. on my 4.6. they sound crappy. Go with flo. mst. or dyno mx. or one of the type. You want a good sound from a stock eng. Thats what you have to do. If you have cams and compression the thats a different story.

Yeah great sound, Bro... Throaty, [email protected]!!sy, Just loud enuff to make the point!!! But you've got headers on there, no? Any other mods?? I'm working completely stock 'cause my wallet says so right now.
I'm lovin' that tone, but ONLY looking to make a muffler change... I dunno, I started this upgrade based on everybodys reviews/clips on the Flowmasters, an by contrast, once again, I find myself diggin the sounds from the 40's over anything else thus far.
No chance anyones got a dead stock system with 40's installed to listen to??!??
Again, I very much appreciate everybodys input. This is a killer forum.

FWIW, I've got a 93 Cougar v6 I've just pulled off the road for the T-bird. Trannys f#d, but everything else is great. Anyone need parts??!?? I'm in NY......

It only got louder at WOT with the headers, but idle and cruising is still about the same (with true duels and a X pipe and stock manifolds)

I originally cut off the mufflers on the stock system and it was quieter then my current set up.

This video is with a complete stock engine and stock exhaust with no mufflers and only the stock resonator.

It's because the "http-colon-slash-slash" is repeated in the link. If you copy the link and remove the first one, it will work.

That setup is stock three cats, resonator delete, replace mufflers with Thrush Turbo. I'd say it's about two steps louder than stock, and three notes deeper. Nothing radical, just a tastefully done mod. Especially when compared to having no mufflers.

I'm Mister_T and I approve this message.

I like it. It sounds real good playing through my stereo: mellow, not so loud as to be obnoxious, but enough sound to say it's a V8.

That's the kind of sound I want from mine. Up till now, though, the only clips I could find were Magnaflow, Flowmaster, race bullets, or just chopped pipes, all of which were too noisy for my taste.

So I've been holding back, even though the stock exhaust on my '95 has been getting on my nerves lately. It sounds positively wheezy. You can't tell from listening to it what, if anything, is under the hood.

The price is certainly right (way better than the $300+ for the Dynomax kit). I think that's what I'm going to do.

Now if the turbos could just be tucked up behind the fender like the stock mufflers, with some downspouts....

An exhaust shop should be able to tuck them up. The Thrush Turbos I got are shorter & narrower than the stock mufflers.

Resonator delete??

Will that screw me up on the Sniff Test??!?? I'm in NY and have no idea how any mod over muffler swap might get me killed on the inspection...

no. resonators are all about sound, not about emissions.

As long as the cat's are not touched you will be fine. If in doubt contact someone with the DMV or who ever handles these matters.
