cat making funny noise?

at about 1200 or so rpms, i get a funny noise from the center cat or whatever that one is, i cant think of what its called right now, anyways, i get this funny like... metal vibrating sort of noise from it and not sure what it is. i checked it out and it almost looks like maybe there is a plate inside there jiggling around? is that right? any ideas?

If there's stuff vibrating inside then the catalyst has broken up and needs to be replaced.

I'm having the same issue, cats are bad, replace.

my question is, how do you know it's the third cat?? I can't get mine to do it unless the engine is under load, it won't do it when it's out of gear.

oh see mine in park neutral drive anything it makes a funny vibrating noise at about 1200.
now if its bad my question is will it affect performance if its bad or damage anything. im talking like drastic. obviously if it is not 100% its effecting performance somewhat

and its not really "stuff" im pretty sure it looks like a plate with codes on it or something...?

Mine had that too, its some ID tag spot welded under the heat sheild that breaks loose. I was able to pull it out with needle nose pliers.

ok, well then I'm in a different spot. I had the same stupid tag fall off, I pulled it out but I'm still making the noise.

as I said it's only happening when the engine is loaded, and mostly only when it's cold (I guess something is expanding when it gets hot)

sadly, my problem goes beyond the stupid little tag.....but don't count your chickens, this is exactly what happened to me.

BigJohnny, you're very right. I had the same symptoms and had to replace the cat. However, it gave me a perfect excuse to get my exhaust done. So props to you Johnny.

Are you sure its cat related? I know my car makes weird noises when in park and more in neutral. I'm like 95% sure its valve body buzz. Mine sounds like a fan blade hitting a stiff piece of paper, and oscillates high and low pitch.

Just throwing that idea out there.

Well, mine would make rattling type noise but only under load. Generally between 1500 and 2000. The cats were non existent when we pulled them so I am pretty sure that is where my issue was coming from. The whole core off the cat, whatever it is called, was in pieces. When we shook them in our hands, it was like a marraca. But every since the exhaust change I haven't experienced any rattle issues. What do you mean by valve body buzz? I'm not sure I follow.

i pulled the plate out today. didnt work. still makes the noise. but i noticed just behind the plate. where it splits. that bracket or whatever it is, is not tightened and causing the noise by vibrating. the bolts look pretty rusted and ill address it later. can i just tighten it together? the exhaust is fine not hanging or anything and the exhaust is hardly flowing out it. but i am getting some kind of fluid maybe water coming out of that area??

at this point it's fairly safe to say that you can tighten whatever you want, your cats are bad and that's what's rattling. just like cougar fan, and what I will likely find when I remove mine, yours have most likely burned out inside or broken.

I got some Magnaflow cats 94004 that I'm going to weld on to it when I get some time, money and figure out how I'm going to remove my others one and not **** up my exhaust.

I read your statement about the water, and it reminded me of something I just read,
I pinched this from another post, and in it J Miller said:

"The front cats are what is known as 2-way cats they convert HC & CO to water and CO2"

Not to prove the exhaust noob I am, but if your 'leaking' H2O from that area, I'd tend to think that somethings split/shot... I'd guess that water should get routed thru the system and burnt off or pissed out the tips, not leak out... But there are plenty of exhaust monsters around here that can address that far better than I....
Besides, all this just sounds like a good excuse to swap it all out an get rid of that crap!!!
