Will mustang v-6 headers fit an SC?

I want to get rid of the horrible cats / resonator on my 90 sc but thinking of putting headers on it while I'm at it. Gonna replace them with high flow cats and a good resonator. But the prices are WAY (!) high for the headers. Is there any other options other than the kooks? Will the mustang v-6 headers work. They are alot less money. Anybody gone that route or made their own?

You can try them, but you will probably run into clearance issues with the steering shaft mod. There may be a set out there that would bolt in though, so maybe buy some used ones on ebay and if it doesn't work, just re-sell them. The other option would be to do the steering shaft mod, then most mustang headers should work.

-91 Cougar LS, coming soon, complete overhaul with a 427" Windsor.
-90 XR7 5-speed black on black w/sunroof, MP2, coated rotors, double intercooler, 15%OD, ported heads, comp stage 1 cam, 85mm TB, 90MM LMAF, 80# injectors, and ported big valve heads
-98 Mark VIII LSC, Procharger P600b, TR3650 swap and 3.73s.
-90 SC Automatic rustbucket winter beater
-97 Tbird Sport 4.6 Nice weather daily driver

ForcFed93 has the mudstain headers on his SC dragster. He used a hammer on the driver's side header to create enough clearance.

The Parts Bin Special is DEAD! It is being parted out.

What steering shaft mod are you talking about? the big hammer?

ForcFed had to indent the driver's side header to clear the steering column shaft, otherwise it works.

I have a spare set of the 3.8 Mustang headers if you are interested. I keep threatening to post them in the for sale section but haven't gotten to it yet.

This is the steering shaft mod.

Usually it is used for the 5.0/351 guys to be able to run long-tubes, but it would also give clearance for mustang headers on a 3.8.

Mad Mikey, ForcFed just whacked the header with a brick hammer to make room. He did nothing with the steering linkage.

I saw that. I was just responding to his question about what the steering shaft mod was. I don't know if a hammer would work for all mustang headers, or just the brand that he got.

Mustang "headers" are garbage. They seem to be choked up at the collector, but do provide a consistant flow balance between the cylinders.
Dave did some bench testing on the different exhaust manifolds a couple years back on SCCOA.

For the "steering mod" you would need to cut the collector, and rotate it 90 degrees or something like that .. there are more threads on SCCOA on the subject.

Best / highest flowing exhaust for a V6 is going to be either Kooks mid or long tubes, and the next best flowing is the 94/95 SC manifolds ( I may have a set here somewhere ... if you are interested ). I can find a link to the flow test results if you are interested in seeing what they are capable of flowing on stock or ported heads. The stock 89-93 SC manifolds flow more than Mustang, or Tbird 3.8 NA headers, but they have un-balanced flow between the passenger side ports.

I was looking at some pics of the mudstain headers and the driver side did look kinda goofy at the collecter. Do you think I'll be okay with just replacing the stock cats and resonator with high flow stuff? How loud are they with out the resonator? It's really quite now. I don't wanna be obnoxious or anything just wake up the tone alittle. The previous owner had the motor rebuilt and there is a warmer cam in it than stock. Wouldn't mind hearing it alittle more. any suggestions?

I had a 90 SC. I did drop out the resonator and both mufflers. It wasn't that loud, but passengers didn't like the drone. I didn't change the pipe size. On my LX (Parts Bin Special) I put on the 1 piece Magnaflow pipe from my shorty headers that contains 3 high flow cats and is a larger pipe than stock. Also, this unit doesn't have pipe bends in the cats. From there I go with 2 1/2" pipe to a Thrursh/Cherry bomb knock off of a Flowmaster muffler. I like the sound.

I dont know .. all of the SC's ive ever heard sound like rice rockets.

My 94 SC has two stock cats, Y pipe, no resonator and pipe to stock mufflers .. sounds like Rice.

I wouldnt bother with Mustang headers. Lots of good information at SCCOA.

Sounds like stock manifolds, good cats and resonator are they way to go. I'm not a big fan of the ricer sound either

They are the Mustang shorty headers and I will probably be putting them up on ebay with a whole bunch of other misc crap within a couple of weeks.



The reason I will be selling all this stuff is that I signed the lease on a REAL shop and am in the process of moving. I didn't realize how much stuff I had accumulated. Here is the new place for anyone interested.

now we have an unbalanced flow, cause its dented.

WOW that's a pretty amazing test! I never would have thought stock manifolds would do so well. I think unless a brinks truck breaks down in front of my house I'll stick with stock manifolds.
