Any cali guys removed the rear cat and passed smog still?

I am trying to make my car a little louder. I was thinking of removing the rear cat out of the system I already removed the resonator. The 2 individual front cats are staying. I was wondering if any of you had problems with passing the cali smog test after removing the 3rd cat. My car will appear to have the 3rd cat still if I do remove it. I will cut the Y cat apart and weld up a new Y pipe and then weld it into the Y cat and then weld it all back together. I am just trying to make my car sound like it is actually a V8. I don;t wwant it really loud, maybe just a little louder than a stock 2v mustang.

I tried listening to the sound files in the sticky above, but most of them were now gone. I am just hoping to be able to get a nice sound and not have to keep redoing everything.

Removing the 3rd cat will not make your car louder - its just going to make your smog inspection numbers go way up but Im sure you'll still pass with the factory cats up front.

Sounds like a waste of time, you would be better off Cutting your mufflers off, that will make your car louder, but you are going to lose a little back pressure at the same time.

My 95 had no mufflers first and no third cat second. No third cat made the car much louder, I don't know about smog through

This is when loud becomes obnoxious and annoying at certain highway speeds.

My professional opinion ... leave it stock or just put some different mufflers on it. Dont cut off the 3rd cat - its illegal.

Thats why I'm glad mine's just a resonator, which I plan to delete this summer when I get my car back from the body shop... (hopefully Tuesday, keeps getting delayed...)

no drone either

what you should do is get the borla resonator and mufflers , that would make it badass

I don't want it too loud. It's a daily driver and I am getting old. I will try some mufflers and see how I like it. The 3rd cat will stay. If the 3rd cat helps that much with the smog numbers and makes it that much easier for me to pass smog, then I am keeping it.

Don't they do a visual inspection during a SMOG check? I ran into that here in PA, had to take my car somewhere else where they weren't so observant.

I decided not to take out the 3rd cat. I didn't want to mess with it when it comes to smog time.

I ended up just getting stock 04 cobra mufflers and welded them on to my car. The car sounds like a v8 now. it is still quiet at idle and cruise but when i step on it it gets a little throaty. I am very happy with the sound. I wasn't looking for loud as I have a car that is already extremely loud. I wanted it to sound like a v8 since it is one and I ended up with that. For anyone else doing this, the car is only slightly louder at idle and cruise and then comes alive when you step on the gas pedal. Don't expect it to be overly loud. I can still hear the engine over the exhaust until about 2,000 RPMs. I just wanted to update this for anyone searching out the topic and finds this.

Heck if i know, they were stock 04 cobra mufflers. That would make sense to me if they have pressure relief valves in them why they get louder once I really step on the throttle. I will try to get the part number off of them after dinner and look them up and post back. I really love how quiet they are when cruising and how they are a little louder on heavy throttle.

Part number is hard to read but appears to be fI7950-a-0274 which brought nothing up in a search. They are what ever muffler was used on a stock 04 Cobra as ford put it ont eh show room floor.

do you do 55 in the 55 mile per hour zone? speeding is illegal.

1992 sport, m5r2 swap. Next, headers and exhaust
1991 super coupe. Five speed. New motor mounts and a few performance parts coming
1990 super coupe auto. Needs new crank
Plus a few parts cars

Is that a rhetorical question ?

The Speed limit is 65 MPH here in California, and yes I do abide. Thank you.

The problem with removing the 3rd catalytic converter is that when the Smog tech does a visual inspection, you will Fail.

I have the same mufflers for my DOHC Tbird, I just havent welded them on yet. Was wondering how they might sound after installation ...

Why should that matter when there are already two cats on the system?

I was under the impression that the third cat was more of a "fail-safe" type feature just in case some gasses got past the first two.

I don't know about California, but I'm just thinking as long as the two existing cats are CARB compliant there shouldn't be an issue as the guy doing the visual inspection will see that there are two cats.

besides that, the third cat is almost far enough away to not make much of a difference. it takes a lot longer to reach operating temps.

Rest In Peace Mom.

Because if your smog guy notices the 3rd cat missing - it can be recorded as a Failure in the DMV system. Its just a hypothetical situation .. chances are, Most smog techs wont notice - but if I were doing a smog, on YOUR car, here in California, with my license .. I would definately look under your car and you better have all 3 cats if you want to pass.

Yes the car passes the emissions test with only two cats - its the Visual test. I got around this on my 94 SC .. they only put 2 cats on the 5 speeds, but the Automatics have 3.

If the car is 96 or newer, the Cats also need to be OBD2 certified in California.

Why are you guys so persistant about removing the 3rd cat ??

The thing about California / Emissions .. is that we have 36+ million people here, and just as many cars - that is a LOT of cars.

I was just curious really. We can pass visual here so long as the guy can see a cat on each pipe. After that if it passes smog, it's good to go.

Cali has some harsh standards and for good reason like you said.

Rest In Peace Mom.

California won't let us legally modify the exhaust system from the cats forward. I have left the 3rd cat in place and will remain to do so. I ended up finding the sound I was after and I like it.

i used to live in cali. i removed the resonator and mufflers and straight pipe it sounds nice sound nice without mufflers, if you want a bit louder and u dont get annoyed by the sweet sound of the engine take the resonator out. i never had problems smoging the car.
