P0161 Walkthrough

Hi guys, I have P0161 error code, read some threads related to this but no simple answer what to do.

Error is for heater for rear sensor on drivers side, shows up after ca. 40 mins of driving, ever on a cold engine/exhaust

I did unplugged sensors when changed my transmission, it is possible i switched left rear with right rear as harness for both are the same lenght and color - does it matter?

I read also about checkin impedance on pins - pls advice which pin should be checked and what are correct readings

Did you try replacing the sensor yet? The heater elements go bad in them often. Most 02's I have replaced for codes was for the heater circuit codes.

I prefer OEM if buying aftermarket look for NTK. I avoid bosch on these.

Advance auto has NTK, buy online, use a coupon code, pick it up in store. You may want to swap them from side to side to make sure it's the sensor and not wiring.

I love my V8, but I'd love it more if all 8 cylinders worked. (they do now)

I use Denso O2's in my cars and I have NEVER had an issue with them.

Having ONLY the p0161 I would guess that it's the sensor that's crapped out. If it were all one bank or all 4 o2 heater circuit failure than the problem is bigger than just the o2

+1 on Denso, inexpensive compared to some of the other brands and no issues so far after 2 years.

I just replaced my O2 sensor (drivers side, after cat) and the replacement was a Bosch for $57. Was it a mistake to get the Bosch for this? I just did this about 5 days ago.

Not a complete mistake........

the bigger mistake is that you only bought one.... and put it after the cat. When I got mine I bought 2 and put them BEFORE the cats because that's where you actually need the o2 sensor to be at it's best readings as it checks and adjusts numerous things, which can net you more power, a smoother running engine, and better gas milage. The post cat o2 sensors only test to make sure the cats are working.

I've never been all that knowledgeable when it came to emissions systems. From what I remember when I had my exhaust off the car (when I put my trans in) the ones before the cats were in a PITA spot. Is it a tough job with the exhaust still in the car?

The driver side isn't bad, it's the passenger side that's a royal pain. Save yourself the trouble and get an O2 sensor socket beforehand.

That's what I used for the O2 sensor that I replaced after the cat. Autzone rents them for approx. $27 deposit. I don't change O2 sensors that often (knock on wood) so I figured I would rent the tool as opposed to buying it. Now if I'm not throwing a CEL, should I just leave the pre cat sensors alone? Or does the factory ECU leave enough variance in the readings to the point that a sensor could be failing, but not trigger a light?

Huh. Bought mine for $8 at Harbor Freight.

WELL worth it, with the Cougar, the Malibu, the stepson having an Escort and a Taurus (and a Dakota, but don't think it's got an O2 sensor), and any other vehicles. That and until I started swapping, they were ORIGINAL O2s in all of them.

Escort and Taurus are still original, front are in the Malibu, but the rear and the two in the Cougar are new (Bosch for the Malibu, Motorcraft for the Cougar - don't scream, Bosch made the OEs for Chevy and are great in them, whereas they suck planetary masses through stir sticks on Fords.)

There's a Harbor Freight in Burbank Illinois, maybe an hour or so away from my house. I've been meaning to go there and pick up some stuff, and now I just might have to.

one question - you say ntk or denso, but i checked and have stock sensors made by bosch - still sure its good change for non-stock brand?

There are 2 distinctly different sensors. NTK type and Bosch type. Bosch were not factory on these. Someone had to change them.

Maybe canada or california emissions but I have never seen it. They could have run out for a month and got bosch for a backup...who knows.
