resonator removal?

Hi all, I removed my mufflers yesterday, but I'm not satisfied with effect I got - it doesnt sound V8 enough to me, will removing resonator make it sounds better?

Right now its like this:

How do we know your definition of "sounds better"? Take it off and check it out, let us know.

Your car has three cats in the front, a resonator in the middle, and two mufflers in the back. You said you took off the mufflers, so probably removing that little resonator isn't gonna change much.

Punch out the third cat (that's what I did), or remove it altogether would produce a bigger difference.

1: Mid-Pipe
2: Resonator
3: Third Cat

Some of the people here with true dual exhaust and a tune have cars that sound like that.

Check out the exhaust thread under mandrel system...pretty cheap bolt on, comes with high flow cats I believe. Had some bugs the company should have worked out by now.
Theres alot wrote on it just check it out.

Here's mine with no mufflers or resonator.

Still not THAT great but cant beat free lol. Has a nice crackle. I have a feeling punching out the third cat would help more as mentioned.

It shouldn't come on as there is no o2 sensor behind the third cat.

No, it did not trigger my CEL.
Sounds pretty decent! You will get better sounds with engine mods and/or tune.

Hey, I just noticed you're from Maine! Where are you? My whole family lives in Sumner, and I own a place near Lincoln.

Probably have to say IMO the best sounding bird I've heard on here would be Slidebird. TM posted a drifting video of his car a while back and it sounded awesome

This is the exact thread I have been looking for. I think your car sounds great. Have any of you had any issue with the removed mufflers messing with your cats? I had read once that removing the mufflers would mess with backflow and would eventually ruin the cats. If any of you can let me know---please do. I may do mine this weekend.

Also.....How did you punch out the cat? I am a novice mechanic past oil changes, alt., idler pulleys, MAF, intakes, etc...but have spent thousands on my mustang. Trying to mod up the T-bird myself and cheap! Thanks guys. Great site.

I've posted this in a different thread, but since the OP is looking for ideas.....

The first is exactly what the OP did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLjaX...eature=related

The second is with true duels with a chambered muffler mid mounted
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3voLLPuwy7o

The third is the current setup with a Magnaflow DI/DO Mid mounted muffler (still true duels) All three have gutted front two cats too, stock manifolds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nesz...eature=related

Hope you enjoy!

It's a magnaflow Duel in duel out 2.25 resonated x. You can find them at summit no problem. Or if you go with the exhaust kit from mandrel exhaust systems, you can upgrade to that muffler. Now remember it goes in the center of the car just behind the tranny and is your X pipe as well. So for me it was perfect since it took care of everything I needed lol. These cars like X pipes to balance out the exhaust pressure. I like spending money on one muffler that does the job of two lol. It all worked out.

I have that same set up, including the rear pipes, but in 2.5. Sounds great.

Mods? Do the ones in the garage waiting to go on the car count?

Many thanks to my fellow Veterans; I am honored to be a part of your ranks.

I'm running the same 2 1/4" duals with the long magnaflow di/do muffler/x-pipe on my DOHC swap, mark viii manifold/cat on the drivers side, thunderbird cat on the passenger side, my pipes dump at the diff though. Next setup for me is kooks or modified cobra long tubes and dual 2 1/2" pipe. Love the di/do magnaflow muffler though, great sound throughout all of my mods.

How long is that Resonator? I am wondering if you could cut out that third cat & resonator, stick a Cherry bomb glass pack muffler where they are, and hack the back mufflers off. Wonder what that would sound like.

I may try it tomorrow. Gotta do some measuring...

The resonator is like 21 inches long overall something like that. Cherry bombs will sound great at idle imo, but no real tone once you get on it, and they will crack like crazy on the deceleration. Plus from what I've been told, the X pipe is a real benefit to our cars because of the firing order and the mismatch in pressure in the two banks at certain times.

A "X" pipe actually helps pull the exhaust through the pipe when there is a mis match in pressure.

I'm a rookie too, I have learned alot here in the last few months from the gurus here. Pay attention to them and you will be fine imo. Keep one thing in mind though, if your talking about a 4.6 mustang, then it's the same on them as the birds. X pipes right now are being tested against H pipes. Some dynos have each being a bit higher, so I say that they are about equal lol.

And your welcome.

Sawzalled those mufflers off today. Clamped on an extension and some chrome tips and ran them out the sides behind the wheels to give it an old stock car feel. I was pleasantly surprised with the growl. I think I'll stop there for a while. For a driver.....I think that's enough. Easing into the peddle-- it has a nice little rumble. If I need to yell at the passenger, I can take the Stang.

Thanks guys. Got some sound and spent 30 bucks. Perfect.
