32v LH manifold and converter delete questions

I have been asked to give some advice on an exhaust setup for a 98 LSC. The main complaint is rotten egg smell. I have suggested the mid mount magnaflow in addition to replacing the cats. He wants to delete them. What is the best way to remove the LH cat since its made to the manifold? Does anyone sell replacement manifolds?

The kooks long tubes are going to be out of his budget. How about shorty headers for Cobra? Do they hit the steering shaft too? Should he just gut it himself? I really dont like the idea of a gutted body. How about cutting the pipe from the manifold and putting a flange there? anyone done it? It would be easy if the manifold was round right there, lol. I wish I had one to directly look at now. I never really thought about this when I had my LSC, so I never had to cross this bridge. Someone please shoot me some good info on this sometime. Thanks in advance!

straight from RESET's build thread, it can be done, obviously easier with it out of the car or the K-member removed but here's a link. It's round above the cat.

Very nice info! Thanks Chris. All I would need is some type of flange to weld up there. I am assuming its 2.5 or 2.25" in that area. If not, I could always adapt it! Now the next big question is....can I hack that off with a sawzall without removing the LH manifold? I am thinking it will be hella difficult to get a good straight cut in the car.

Does the EGR tube run to the LH side on all Marks?

I might happen to have a manifold off a 1996 Mark, Cat intact .. it has the secondary air injection port also. Large item though.

Secondary air injection? That must be since you are in cali, right? I could always plug it off. Does it have the EGR tube hook up? If you do have it, how much would you want for it shipped to my shop or the guys house? I'll let him know.

Im not sure if its a California only part, I thought they were on the Gen 2 Mark's .. this one happens to be a 1996 though, I would check for a pump and metal tubes going to the exhaust manifolds. Cat is worth at least $45 recycled, plus shipping on a large item, PM me with an offer if you are interested.

Well I convinced him that before we damn the cats for his rotten egg smell, we should rule out that it may be coming from the rich WOT situation and the aerodynamics of the car drawing in exhaust fumes. I read about that on markviii.org. My 97 used to do it and I always suspected a bad converter, but my mufflers were cut off under the car and I never understood how the smell got inside the car at highway speeds. Some people were suggesting that replacing o2 sensors is a normal fix for that, but it sounded like there were plenty of unsuccessful cases.

I'm doing his Jmod tuesday. Then next week we are doing magnaflow mid mount x muffler and removing the stock ones, moving back the stock tips 1" in the process (to help prevent fumes from entering the car.) Around this time I expect his tuner will show up and we can load his Lasota tune. He should have fun with that for some time Lets keep our fingers crossed on the egg smell though. Thanks for the good replies, and if anyone has good info on the egg smell please post it up!!

EDIT: also remembered, we are gonna remove the stock air silencer, if there is one. I dont think I ever tried to pull it off my 97, but there is probably something down in the fenderwell!

Jmod went perfect. The tuner made it even more aggressive feeling The tuner also took care of this rotten egg smell that was probably coming from the richness at WOT. We are going to keep the tips in the stock location now, delete the stock mufflers and 3rd cat, then install this new magnaflow mid-mounted!
