You should tack it in place in the car, then drop the whole y pipe back down and weld it up. You will need to make some intermediary pipes to make the aftermarket cats fit, even then it will be hella tight. I actually did put one on my 92 Cougar v6 on the RH side, but it ended up further away from the engine. Those small diameter spun converters would fit much better.

im doing it off car.. and im straight piping it.. i need it to work cause my passenger cat is shot..
You need to at least tack everything together on the car. You can remove it to do your finish welds, but if you're just eyeballing it on the floor, you're going to run into trouble when you go to fit it to the car.
