Interchangeability

Howdy!

I have what's probably a stupid question.

Bill at SCP claims the 3.8SC and 5.0HO downpipes for 1991-1993 TBirds/Cougars are the same.

Does anyone else know if they are? And are the 3.8NA downpipes also interchangeable?

Thanks in advance!

Ralph,

Can't help you with the SC or 5.0 but the 96-97 3.8NA downpipes were different, drivers side I believe.

It's not a 97 Sport, it just looks like one!

Yah, the 94-95 SC are different than the 89-93 downpipes, so Mandrel Exhaust Systems needs to know which one.

I wasn't specific enough, I meant 89-93 due to the variance in 94.

'Course, it'd be nice to know if the 94-97 V6 were all the same - be helpful in case someone's dumping their old SC exhaust and someone like S4Gunn could buy it cheap!

I actually already have an SC "true dual" exhaust thanks to Dan.. on the cheap. He needed a stock exhaust with cats to pass smog and I wanted my craptastic lemons car to sound like a proper racecar. Considering the leaks in the piping that drove me nuts trying to track down and patch, I think it was a wash as to who got the better deal here

It was a single piece setup with cherry bombs for downpipes and flowmasters at the end. I believe it came from an early model SC. My car is a 95 3.8L N/A tbird.

BTW, this post says that 3.8L and 5.0L downpipes are in the same position. This bodes well if (when?) we finally bite the bullet and go to a v8

The exhaust I got had only 1 good cat - the other one was hollow.

The Dual exhaust you got was from a 95 SC.

The 94/95 3.8 NA and SC use the same exhaust manifolds so they interchange - although the stock SC exhaust has a slightly larger diameter pipe.

Now, I thought the SC manifolds were different than the NA because I've heard how they are the best flowing available.

5.0 DownTubes

Ralph..

I think Bill is making that claim because the downpipes he sells are 2 seperate pieces..

So you could basically twist one side or the other to get it to fit right..

The driver side downtube on the 89-93 SC, and the 91-93 5.0L MN12 both have a 90 degree bend where they mount to the collector flange..

The passenger side downtube looks pretty close as well..

I've heard a few guys say the factory SC exhaust system will bolt up to the 91-93 5.0L MN12s..

I'll just clarify what ClintD said..

The stock 89-93 SC exhaust does not have a bung on the passenger side downtube for the O2 sensor, but will otherwise bolt up fine..

IIRC Joker77_2005 was using the SCP Catless Downtubes on his 5.0, and said they fit perfect..

I hope that helps..
