Someone help me with more sound?

OK so i have a 96 4.6 thunderbird and i have played with some different exhaust set ups and have not come to success just yet. My current set up is a no 3rd cat no resonator, 2.25" tru dual from the downpipes into dual flowmasters (rear mounted). Now this setup is ok but i would like more sound. Also this set up is not as aggressive sounding as i would like. If anyone could help me get more sound out of my exhaust i would greatly appreciate it. However, i not only want more sound i want more scratch and more of that crackle sound that alot of cars with x-pipes make. Call me a ricer or whatever u want but i like that scratchy sound alot.

I am started to lean towards going dual glasspacks. however, i dont have a clue which glasspacks are best or even which ones rust out after a short amount of time etc. Anyone who has had experience with glasspacks in general or even better glasspacks on a thudnerbrid would be GREATLY appreciated. However, i have heard a few things from friends that i dont know if it is true or not. I have heard that the shorter the glasspack such as a 18" size will give you a more raspy scratchy sound, and the longer the glasspack, say 24" will give you a more grumbly sound? Is this true? I have also heard that glasspacks are actually very restrictive mufflers and actually cut down on horspower? is that true? Anyone that can help me or anyone that has had experience with glasspacks on a 4.6 bird would be greatly appreciated. i really just want to be turned in the rigth direction... Thank you to any thta can help!

im thinking on goin with dual glasspacks too n my 4.6. ad yes i think the longer the deeper and the shorter the more raspy. as far as cuttin down on HP thats new on me, i don;t know about that. go to the "official exhaust thread" or something at the top of the exhaust thred it has bunch of clips and set ups for 4.6.

let me know how u make out with the glasspacks

I wouldn't go glasspacks. That's what I have. Don't waste your money. Idle, and high rpm's sound SWEET, but everywhere else (in town/highway driving) is annoying, and sounds like shight. As far as glasspacks being restrictive...have you ever looked through a glasspack? Look through one, and then tell me if you think it could be more, if not equally restrictive than any other muffler. If you want true duals I would look at the magnaflow straight through muffs mid-mounted. Pretty sure the key to being loud is mid-mount with bigger tail pipes. If you want a raspy sound... buy a trans am and put an slp loudmouth on it.

I have a 2.25 dual setup on my bird too. It's from the first cats back and has an x in it too. I originally had straight through muffs on it and now have Flows. The original loud Flows. And it's still super quiet. I thought about cutting off the mufflers and just having some stainless 3" tips, Mustang style out the back... X pipes tend to run quieter than H or straight pipes. Otherwise, I'm gonna get some Dynomax bullet mufflers. I have magnaflows on my 04 stang and I think those'll be just as quiet as the flows...

I had true duals with out cats and glasspacks and I got tired of all the popping. It was real loud though. People would tell me that my car sounded like a truck. Now I have rear mounted Flowmasters and I love the sound and it's not real quiet either.

So from what i understand from all the posts is glasspacks could be a love it or hate it type of sound... Ok... I will take that into consideration. So if i mount the mufflers a bit closer to the motor and buy say some 3 inch tips it will amplify the sound? Does this mean the closer i put the mufflers to the downpipes the more noise i will get? Or will it only get louder to a certain point? I have some small tips on my bird right now... since my mufflers are rear mounted you cant fit much of a tip in there... i think my tips are about 2 inches in diameter and slant cut. DOes anyone know if the length of the tip makes a difference also? Thank you for all the help!

Do you have any pictures of your X-pipe set up? Also did this x pipe seem to add more scratch to the exhaust note? Or not much of a differencE? Thank you

No pics, sorry. I bought the X off ebay and had my boys at Midas bend it up for me, at no cost, of course . I used to work for AutoZone and they were one of the customers I called on. The guy that did the work had a bunch of custom exhaust experience (he was from the South, lol) and said this was the most difficult job he ever did. As far as the sound, its very smooth and mellow. In my experience, X pipes really respond to different systems in many ways, but they always seem to quiet things down.

As a general rule of thumb, the closer mufflers are to the engine, the quieter the exhaust will be. BUT, since we have our convertors right off the manifolds, they are acting like mufflers way up front.

I'm really thinking about buying some tips and hacking off the Flows just for S&G. I can always weld 'em back on... I'll keep you informed...

Today i was searching around for mufflers and came across the mufflers that have dual inlets and dual outlets... Would this increase sound by running just a single muffler instead of 2 seperate mufflers? Also i have seen the mufflers that have built in x's in them.... What is the benefit to having a x built into a muffler as opposed to just a regular "high flow muffler"?

do you have the front cats? Cuz if you have the front cats thats mostly your problem. The front cats are VERY restrictive. Can't wait till next year so my car just falls into the saftey inspection so I can remove them and just have it right down to the borlas. Can't wait.

Yes i do have front cats. But i do live in CA so i need them. Will it benefit me if i move the cats a little more toward the rear of the exhaust? Or would it be more convinient if i just put some high flows in the stock location?

get rid of the 90 degree bend for the front cats with some new bent pipe and some 2.5 inch high flows.

Well will high flows effect the cars emissions so much to the point where i couldnt pace California smog. Because as everyone knows we have some pretty funky exhaust laws.

Also cats are fairly expensive and i would like to spend a little less then what high flows cost. Also glasspacks will be a much cheaper install then cats. Thanks for the help!

can't help you with the emissions stuff... you could always keep your stock exhaust for inspection time and keep your special exhaust for the rest of the time. and I believe hiflows are like 160 from super coupe performance for the 2 shipped... And sometimes they have deals. I missed the deal when they were like 130 shipped... but oh well. I'm waiting for another year so I can just cut mine off and not worry about it anymore.

Mid-Mounted mufflers would make it louder, if you think about it. having the mufflers towards the front will give the tone some time to resonate through the pipes untill they reach the end. Did you ever hear any BAD sounding 4.6L mustangs? They come with mid mounted mufflers. Cut off the cats, get a dual in, dual out flowmaster with 2.5 inch pipes, and it will be LOUD and sound good. =)

Ok... so for the record does mounting your mufflers closer to the engine quieter or louder? As there is obviously some misunderstanding between members on this board...

So if i midmounted my current flowmasters and put pipes out to the rear and cap it off with say some 3 x 18" tips... would that increase the sound or muffle it furthur?

mid-mount your mufflers.. you can use any performance mufflers.. it will be a LOT louder and sound like a mustang (with more rumble to it ) if you have tail pipes behind it...

On my 93 LX 5.0.. Im running a true dual 2.5" cat back.. high flow magnaflow cats, x-pipe where the resonator was, and dual magna flows at the rear of the car.. its kinda loud, but no real rumble to it... actually its buzzy how it is, kinda like a mercedes clk 430 for example... Ive heard the same car (93 LX) with true duals and tail pipes, and it sounded almost identical to a 5.0 stang...

Im moving my mufflers later this year myself, because Im looking for a little more rumble also...

I pass smog here in LA with no problems either with the high flow cats or the rest of my setup, and moving my mufflers to the middle of the car wont change that either...

stay away from the glasspacks!! just get a good performance muffler... flowmaster sounds really good, but they arent actually constructed that well, and will fall apart in like 5 years... spend the extra $$ get a good stainless steel muffler if you can and your all good... magnaflows are really nice, and they seemed like they were very simular to Borla's that day I was standing there in the exhaust shop weighing my options...

Ok sounds good... I have two more questions... would it be louder with 2 flowmasters or with a single dual in dual out muffler? And would the diameter and length of the tips have any noticeable difference in sound volume or tone? Thanks again

It might, depending on your preferences. If I was going for loudness i would go with 2.5 inch piping, a dual in dual out flowmaster (no cats) and end it with 3 inch chrome tips exiting the back. That will be plenty loud enough. =)

I disagree completely. I have glasspacks, through 2.25 true duals, and it sounds amazing. I get kudos from all the Mustang guys all the time.

Idle, sounds amazing. Has a nice cammy sound. High RPM sounds amazing, and in town driving sounds pretty bad a** too. Alteast that's what I get told.

The sound you are describing is a mid-mount muff system withOUT cats... I know you live in CA, but this will give you that sound you are talking about. Its raspy and loud, but not annoying. Its the setup I have and sounds very very similiar to a 4.6L Stang with a aftermarket exhaust.

Sold my Cougar . But I am in the market for another MN12 project!
