4.6 DOHC header question

Ok, so I have a mark 8 motor that I will be putting in my cougar probably this summer. I want some long tube headers for it, but they simply aren't available from the research I have done. Seems like the only thing out there is the kooks mid-length. My question is basically 2 parts.
#1) I know several 5.0L guys have done the steering shaft mod and ran mustang headers. Would this work for the 4.6DOHC too, or would I likely have other clearance issues? I don't mind having to beat in my floor pan, I just don't want the headers hitting the shock towers or something like that.
#2) If the steering shaft mod and mustang headers is not likely to work, does anyone who has kooks headers know how difficult it would be to cut off the collector, extend the pipes, and weld the collector back on? Are the pipes straight for a while before they go into the collector or is there not much room to work with?

Thanks.

Mike

for question 1 i don't think it's a feasible idea because the modular 4.6 is way bigger and wider than the pushrod 5.0 or 5.8. so with the 4.6 and the exhaust in there i don't see how the shaft can be put it in without major binding. i have been thinking for the same thing but after seeing the picture and make comparison i've really have no idea that how it may even be possible.

While you could turn a set of Kooks 3/4 length headers into long tubes, it really wouldn't be worth the hassle in my opinion.

Well from a performance standpoint, there is a lot to gain by lengthening the tubes of the kooks headers, as midlength headers are not the optimum design for a street car. That is probably the route that I will take since I don't think anyone has done the steering shaft mod on a 4.6 and it would be easier than making a set from scratch.

4 Cam Bird installed the prototype ART longtubes and they were FUBAR, totally a big problem. Very little ground clearance, smacked the starter, etc...Your best bet from an install, feasibility, and minimal headache sake are going to be the Kooks with the adaptor flange thingy.
