Question What's your Dream Exhaust?

Hey guys.

Starting to do my research into my MN12 exhaust upgrade. Going the whole nine - headers to tips. TRUE Dual.

I know I want the Borla Pro Mufflers (sound), and I believe im looking at the Shorty style headers.

I want performace, but I also want quiet (somewhat). We do have emmisions testing here in BC Canada so I can't omit anything out of the exhaust as I understand. I also plan on doing some of the minor engine upgrades as listed in the tech articles. I'm guessing the Cougar will be at around 300 hp when its done with everything, so I want to make sure I accomodate the exhaust for this.

What are your suggestions on the headers, cats, the resonators, Y pipe, H Pipe, or X pipe? I know a little but not a lot! Just want to see where this post goes.

So I say, whats YOUR dream exhaust?

Any idea how to acomplish that ?

I already have 1.75" / 3" kooks headers mated for now to the stock exhaust, but that creates a huge restriction.

What about 3" cats after headers, 2 into 1 muffler (2x 3" in -> 4" out) single 4" pipe in the gas tank area, 4" cutout before the pumpkin, then split into two 2.5" pipes to 18" mufflers ?

I'll take 392bird's exhaust. Long tubes to 2 glasspack mufflers, then straight out the sides through the rocker panels.

So Rod,
How loud is the magnaflow. I was looking at the 22" for my 5.0 with 2.5 all the way to the back. After rodding around in my nephews 5.0 Stang this afternoon with flowmasters on the end of 3" I would prefer a little less volume on my Bird. I will be eliminating the 3 cats so have to take that into account.

Thanks
Brad

It's relatively quiet until you stab the throttle, then it really gets everyone's attention. It turned out exactly the way that I wanted it to. Here are a couple videos of the car to give you an idea of how it sounds.

On the dyno

In the car

The in-car video is pretty old. The car is a quite a bit quicker now.

Rod, do you think a 5x11 muffler would fit in the tunnel ? It looks like yours is a 5x8 and it still has some room ?

Yep, that muffler is a 5"x8"x18". If a 5"x11" would fit, it would certainly be tight. Can't say for sure without getting under there and measuring though.

I dont exactly have a dream exhaust, long as its loud and doesnt hurt my car more then help, currently have Flowmasters original 40 on my lincoln, I like it, little loud but oh well, I want to get a full Borla system...headers, exhaust with no cats and pipes out the side not rear.

dream exhaust huh?

well i was fortunate enough to get my hands on accelerated race technology's exhaust... 2.5 inch mandrel bent all the way back with high flow cats, x pipe connector running through flowmaster 40 series... if i wanted to do it over again i prolly would have gone with their 80 series and got the coating for the pipes and have some skid plates fabricated for the downtubes off the high flow cats as i have scraped a couple of times around town... and kooks mid length headers too... however i devoutly wish SHM still had those long tubes available for mn12s... anyone know if there still are long tubes available for our cars? or is it strictly a custom fab deal?

I have the same question. I would like to run the Magnaflow 12568 muffler. I am removing the cats so think I need a little more muffler. I know I can fit it length wise but need under there to tell width. The mufflers also has 5.75" center to center spacing which eases things aswell as Tru-X layout internally. I am hoping. Two weeks till I will be working underneath again, tackling rear suspension when I get the knuckle and diff bushings. I can check then if you haven't already.
