Removing front Y pipe

I guess ill start by saying im i cheap college student so humor me on this...

i was looking at removing the front y pipe and gutting the cats but i have one concern....

i know on some vehicles that the exhuast maninfold studs/nuts are sometimes very very hard to get off of the vehicle.... so i guess what im saying, is what is the best way to remove those nuts that hold the y pipe to the exhuast manifolds without accidentally removing the studs from the manifolds themselfs?? would it be best to use an impact or to do it by hand?

any help would be aprreciated!
