3rd cat or Resonator/pre-silencer?

I am unsure what exactly the thing is that looks like a long muffler right after the cats. Is it a 3rd cat? Or could I safely cut it off, put on a straight pipe and then find a good resonator/muffler to deepen the tone?

I call it like I see it. My 3.8 has 3 cats, and the midmount resonator.

You don't have 3 cats. That 3rd thing after the first 2 cats is the resonator. Some 3.8's do have 3 cats, but I think the only ones with 3 were in 96-97 when OBDII was implemented.

Mine has 3 cats. Or should I say had...

Actually IIRC from my 1996 Service Manual it lists 3 exhaust configurations. All 4.6's had 3 cats. 3.8's outside CA had 2 cats and 3.8's inside CA had 3 cats. But I see ChitownLX is not in CA and still has 3 cats so I dunno.

Sooooooo. It SEEMS that its a resonator. If I go straight pipe on that, suggestions on what to do to take it from sounding like "a swarm of bees" to a "swarm of bees underwater"? ie. deepening the tone. Brand of mufflers/resonators etc?
