Turbo 5.0

Is there any reason I can't use a kit like this: http://www.turbochargedpower.com/94-95%20Mustang.htm

(that kit or any other made for the 94-95 Mustangs)

I realize some customization would likely be required... but since the 5.0 in the Cougar/T-bird is the same as the 94-95 Mustang 5.0... it would seem a kit for those cars would likely be my best bet.

Has anyone tried this yet?

it might work but i dont think we hae the room infront of the motor. also headers would be a pita

I guess the first step would be to compare a 94-95 engine compartment to that of a mn-12.

One good thing is that the headers are reversed... so that might eliminate some issues with clearing the steering shaft... of course no doubt the K-member could get in the way.

next with the headers tho is you dont have much room from the front of the motor to the rad/ fan. if you have an exhaust pipe running that close to the rad i think you might run intp problems especially if you want to get an aftermarkt alum one that it bigger

First thing I noticed was that they have the intercooler pipe coming through the inner fender well, and on our cars that area is structural and can't have a huge hole in it to run piping. I'm sure you could make it work, but don't expect everything to fit like it would in a mustang, and you might end up having to buy different piping, or a different intercooler, etc. just to make it work.

Aww man... you guys are making this sound difficult... all I want is a working and decent looking turbo set up... and you guys keep tellin' me the truth !

Maybe we need to start discussing the finer details of a custom fab turbo setup... what do I need other than a garage that I don't have, money that I don't have enough of and that thing called ambition that escapes me at times?

How do I bend pipes?

How do I choose the right turbo?

Who has turbo know how around here?

the sleeper one says its running the turbo off of one bank. from what i hear thats not good at all because one side is restricted and the other is free. throws off everything

I looked into custom fabbing a turbo set up for the 91 5.0 Bird I used to have. I went as far as to mock up a front mount intercooler and such. You'll have to remember that the most important and overlooked part of a turbo build are the support modificaitons. You will absolutely need to upgrade your:

fuel pump, fuel injectors, MAF along with a custom tune, transmission because a stock AOD will be torn apart at 350 + crank hp.

You have alot of posts so I bet you know this already and I'm just making an ass out of myself. It seemed to me like the easiest and most efficient way to turbocharge our vehicles is a custom set up. I priced things out to around $3000, and thats with no modification to the short block. For about half the money you could simply buy a set of good heads and make similar power without the tuning issues.

Personally, if I was going to invest all the time and money, I'd build up a stout, low compression 302 then give it some serious boost. Forged internals, good heads and a custom ground camshaft with an intercooled custom turbo set up would bring the cougar to life, all be it expensive. With an AOD built to match you would make quite a few corvette and cobra owners furious. The simplicity of the 5.0 and AOD combination make it an incredible base to work off of with extreme potential. Thats why I'm keeping my new Mark VIII as a DD and looking for a 302HO bird or cougar to turn into a vette killer. After having mustangs, lincolns, camaro's and my 91 Bird, its a labor of love but should be well worth it....

On my car... I already have bigger injectors, fuel pump, MAF/throttle body upgrades, shift kit and transmission upgrades... unfortunately I also have an E303 cam, slightly higher compression and a custom chip so I get the most out of 93 octane. I'm running in the 14's with about 290 hp and the nicest sounding exhaust (true dual) I have ever heard on a Cougar.

I know it is a shame to have to undo some of that work... but you can always go faster... and that is what I want most !

I'm still a bit unsure about taking this on... mostly because I haven't done too much custom fab... and I want it to look some what presentable when I'm done. Right now the biggest issue would seem to be creating headers.

My advice is stick with a single setup. It will be easier to fab up. Master power turbos from Brazil are quality as a garret but at an affordable cost. With mild boost the bottom end will be fine. I'm no pushrod guy but your pistons can handle low boost fine. The weak spot is of course the block which twists and cracks at high power levels. Build some log headers or try to flip shorty's with custom flanges welded on. Then dump a 3" single exhaust to the back. Then theres oiling setup, fuel system, tuning, plugs, inter cooling, intake plumbing, blow thru...pull thru..or stand alone efi, carbed? So many different setup options. All i say is research like crazy and take your time don't hurry the build.

Stick with a single set up. Meaning, one side will require a modified short header upside down and the other will require a crossover pipe going into the back of that shorty. I can send you a few schematics I roughed out when I was planning mine. The custom fabrication should only go as far as some simple splicing and welding. The HP turbo kit for 94-95 mustang 5.0 won't fit...not even close enough to rework. I had plans to send my 93 SC with 5.0 conversion to them for building a custom kit, because they said their kits wouldn't work. Since they already had an SC on site to take measurments from (Frank B. aka Dirtybird) they were able to confirm it.

Main differince is the width between the shock/strut towers...the mustang is wider than the MN12 t-bird. I ended up using the same basic layout as the HP kit but everything was custom made to fit the t-bird. A sleeze bag company called Forced Fab in Dayton OH built mine. Most of the hot side parts were done well...the cold side was all screwed up and had to be completly redone.

If your really interested in doing a turbo system, suggest you contact Brian at B&G custom turbos. He is familiar with MN12s and has a great reputation. You can find his contact info over on Turbomustangs.com
