Time to boost the 5.0!

Hey guys,

As most of you know I own a 91 5.0. I've decided I'm going to keep the car and make it a road force to be reckoned with. I'm a second year mechanical engineering student at the University of Connecticut. I figure it's time to get my hands dirty and actually engineer something.. ahaha. Anyway, I'm going to pick up a few books on forced induction. After looking at prices on ebay and such, it seems like turbocharging is more cost efficient than super charging.

Before I even begin a project like this, I was wondering how much boost a stock internals 302 can take. I've been told the block is maxed out at around 350rwhp. I figure my current cobra intake and reworked E7 heads will flow up to this number under sufficient boost. My fears are for the pistons, which I've read will not hold up to much boost.

My plan currently, before reading up, is to pick up a fairly small turbo charger with intercooler. I plan to run a low amount of boost with fairly quick spooling, thus the small turbo. I know there will be alot of custom fabrication required, but my father does own a machine shop.

My current long block set up has 64k on it. As far as I can tell, it is still in very very good shape, hopefully thats not too many miles to boost.

My current list of parts needed, surely to be changed:
Turbocharger
Intercooler
waste gate
mandrel piping
modified exhaust manifold
mounting brackets
24lb/hr injectors (perhaps more?)
fuel pressure regulator
sufficient fuel pump

But with that, time to read up! Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Steve

Lots of guys turbocharge stock 5.0 mustangs of similar age with good luck. 400-450 rwhp from a stock motor isn't uncommon. Suggest you do several weeks of reading on the topic over at turbomustangs.com before you purchase any parts.

I can also give you a few pointers if you want them.

Stevo,
A buddy of mine who owns a Powerdyne supercharged Factory Five Cobra is running the stock bottom end and has had no problems to date. I believe he is pushing about 500 RWHP.

I'm about to purchase two books off of amazon, I'll read those through and then look through as much forum post as possible. My budget for this project will be $1400 +/-, althought that might be cutting it close.

Steve,

Reccomend reading Corky Bell's Maximum Boost. Some of the info is outdated by new technology, but the basics are all there. Also be sure to read "The Turbo Bible" on turbomustangs.com I think it's in the FAQ section. There is also a forum devoted to Do it Yourself/Junkyard builds that may be very helpful.

David

PS: Good luck with that budget, looks pretty thin.

The intercooler and all piping will come at close to no cost. My uncle has a radiator shop and my father a machine shop. I'll be able to piece together a good deal of the parts from stuff they have collecting dust. I've read quite a bit already and it seems like the most fabiraction is going to be in a header. I greatly doubt the headers being sold as "5.0 mustangs" turbo headers will would out in our vehicles. I'm probably going to try and find a mac header, sit it upside down and build from there.

You are correct about the headers for mustangs not fitting. The SN95 (5.0 94/95 mustang) will be close because it uses nearly the same accessory layout. The problem is that the mustang has more width between the shock/strut towers than an MN12 does. Depending on how the headers were made, they may or may not fit. A log style manifold/header would likely be the easiest to fabricate and would provide plenty of flow for the power level your after.

Reversing the MAC headers will likely be your best low budget quick and dirty option. Keep in mind that you will probably have to ditch your AC compressor, EGT system and the Air pump to use them. I also suggest cutting off the crappy ball and socket connections and replacing them with V-band connections.

The AC compressor has already been removed, so that will give me some more room. I'm planning on cramming the turbo on the driver's side. I'm sure the batter will need to be relocated to the trunk. The air pump is bypasses, I could take it off and weld up the bung on the other header.

I'm going to take a Mac header, turn it upside down and fabricate the header/ turbo attachment and modify the back half for flow from the other header. I will simply use it as a base to start from.

What size turbo would you suggest? I've found several on ebay, new, for very good prices but I'm not sure about what size i should choose.

Steve

Thanks for the help by the way. Do you have AIM?

Take a look at www.toohighpsi.com too. That guy has build quite a few low-buck forced induction setups on fords. Good luck. Glad you're doing what that car deserves instead of selling it.

I've read about 10 hours of web sites. It seems like the only single turbo's large enough to suffice a 5.0 are off of cummins turbo deisels. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was leaning towards the MP T70 actually. The compressor map looks to match very nicely for a 5 liter.

Get it with the .81 AR exhaust housing for quicker spool.

Dont buy turbos off of ebay ever. They are not new, they are newly remanufactured, and they are ****.

You're going to want more than 24lb/hr injectors also. Depends on what horsepower you're looking for, but I would probably run 42#'s
