just bought.....

Just bought a 87 turbo coupe black, no rust, with almost every option for 500. the motor is in peices. the guy who had the car before me turned up the boost and blew the headgasket.

also managed to put a little 1/8 inch in diameter, 1/64-1/32 deep divit in the block in between the cylinder walls, on the surface of the block. (where the head sits).

it looks like it might not be that big of a problem but i have to ask will the block still be ok to use.

also what is a good way to clean out the water passages of the block while its still in the car? i have everything off the engine so its just a bare block sitting in the car. I ask becasue the coolent looked like it had never been changed.

You are this far down, why not just take the block out and have it boiled and checked. I don't understand the "divot" either. Either that or you can buy complete 5.0's for very little.

I say pull the block and have it checked. The block is the easy part to come by. Might as well get it all redone since it is gonna be a turbo. Don't wanna have to start all over because you didn't do one little thing inside the block. Also make sure you get the head checked out. They are known for cracking. flush what is left of the coolant system. Do be careful the heater core might just die on you. SO don't flush it or pull the hoses of they are delicate and break very very easy.

Flyin with the bird's or runnin with the cat's either is better than ridin horses!

If you decide to use that block, you can clean the coolant passages by blocking off the openings on the water pump and filling the cooling system with vinegar.
This is exactly what I did when I replaced the headgasket on my '86.

Words of wisdom, right there. If you want to replace the hoses on the heater core, cut a lengthwise slit along the old hoses so you can peel them away from the tubes. Twisting them will almost surely crack the core.

yea......i know i should take the block out, but i figure once i have it out and apart i might as well rebuild it.

now that i have it cleaned up a bit it looks as if most of the coolent and oil hoses need to be replaced anyway.

I should do it right the first time so im gonna take the block out and see what happens.

never rebuilt an engine before tho.
