Talking 1986 Cougar XR-7

While it may not be a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, it's still a 5-speed turbo car.
I thought I would show you guys my other project.
It spent 18 years in Florida before it fell into my hands. This means that it has very little rust and a very solid frame. It's never been wrecked and has the original engine/tranny in the car.
It's about to roll over to just 139k miles, which isn't bad for its age.
I've installed an '87 intercooler and hood, all new suspension, tires, interior parts, lights, door panels from an '84 Elan, and an aftermarket boost gauge.
Upcoming plans include a bigger VAM, injectors and computer. Then comes paint and better engine mods.
This is an odd car with its few, but strange, options. Some of them are leather (with dual manual seats!) and vent windows.
Most of these cars were automatics, so I'm proud to own a 5-speed.

Looks good Zach. Looks like you've made some progress since the last time I've seen it.

Thanks, Ryan.
I blew the headgasket last weekend, actually. It was between the #1 and #2 cylinders. The good news is that everything appears to be ok. I don't think the head is cracked, so I sent it off to a performance machine shop to get "worked over."
While the head is out, I've had time to do some cool stuff in the engine bay.
For example: I spent about three hours polishing the valve cover.

It actually looks better in person.

Here's a little update on the '86...

A good friend of mine helped with some upgrades this past weekend.
We installed an 8UA computer from an '88 Turbo Coupe, along with the bigger VAM and the 35 lb. injectors.
I also installed a gauge pod with some very necessary gauges. I still have to do some wiring for the A/F gauge.
This car is actually starting to become fast, which is great.

Very nice . . . looks like it's coming along well.

Want to come rebuild my brakes and suspension when you're done?

Nope!
I've learned first-hand that I would much rather work on any Fox body over an MN12.

I found a 86 5 speed in the pick and pull the other day. Hurt my feelings. Absolutely no rust (rare) and complete. The dash wasn't even cracked.

85-86 XR-7/Turbo Coupe

I have been searching for a 85-86 XR-7 Turbo. I have not had any luck locating these in the New York area anyway. I found the 87 Turbo rust bucket, but that has been it so far.

rbrown - Did you grab any of the good parts off the salvage yard car?

What you need?

I do not need anything.
I would have bought the whole car if they would have let me.

There is one '86 Turbo Coupe in my local yard, but it's an automatic. The interior is nearly identical to mine, but it doesn't have vent windows.
It has the automatic, which is problably why it's in there. What a shame...
I absolutely love owning this car. It's great to see the look on somebody's face when I spool it out and make loud turbo noises.
Their expression says, "They put turbos in those old things??"

RustinpeiceSC:
I think somebody over at NATO is selling a 5-speed '86 XR7.

I do not need anything for a Turbo Coupe at the moment, just thought if the parts are salvageable someone could use them. I also understand about the home situation though. LOL I have more than a few Super Coupes at the moment that i need to get rid of.

That's about it for the pictures. It isn't very photo friendly at the moment. I can't wait to get this thing painted.
That is a hood from an '87-'88 Turbo Coupe. I'm using it with the factory intercooler.

I must have missed you. That car is so dirty right now. It hasn't been waxed since late summer, and the interior is in really bad shape. It's too damn cold to do anything.
