What is in the Maruader?

I'm curious, what transmissions are in the Mercury Marauders? My dad says its a 4r70W, but I think I read some where that it's actually and AODE.

4r70w.... AODE's are basically the same thing except for the fact that the 4r70"W" has a wider gear ratio

Seems like there was more than one reason the 4R75 wouldn't work for us;

It doesn't have the speedo gear drive on the output shaft, but wasn't there another reason?

You can make it work but you need and older 4R to swap some stuff out with.
just to name a few, im not an expert on these but this is what I was told just to name a few.

I know I'm missing a couple but this is what I remember
output shaft,
swap out the 8 tooth speedo gear with your 7 tooth,
ring set (i think that what it is called)
and you have to re-pin your main harness

output shaft, swap out the 8 tooth speedo gear with your 7 tooth,
This is the last part that comes out of the housing, so this is not easy...

You can do this to use a later model 4r70w in our cars, but I'd search for a low mileage pre- 03 gran marquis or crown vic; that was easy on my 96.

There is a possibility on the 03 transmissions that there is no gear on the output shaft to drive the VSS, but the ring gear is correct. On the 04 there is almost always no drive gear on the output shaft for the VSS and the ring gear is definitely incorrect.

But, running into either 'problem' will make for completely disassembling the transmission to replace either the output shaft, ring gear or both.
