Big problems, need help ASAP

Hey guys,

Engine: 04 Explorer 4.6
Trans: 95 4r70w
T/C: 03 Marauder
Flexplate: 97 Mk VIII

I'm working on getting everything back together to go to the dyno on Tuesday, and I hit a huge problem. My engine wont turn over. I know the engine is not locked up, I'm having an issue I believe with my T/C. I swapped in a Marauder T/C and a (I believe 97) Mark VIII flex plate. If I loosen the trans, shove it back a little, with the T/C still through the flex plate, everything will turn over fine, but as soon as I bolt the trans up tight, the engine wont budge.

Anyone have any ideas??????

Yes, I remember turning it when trying to line up the T/C studs with the holes in the flex plate. I think I'm having clearance issues with that metal plate that goes between the engine and trans. I cant look up in to see for sure though.

I did something like that years ago. I didn't get the torque convertor fully seated into the pump on the tranny. The car didnt want to crank over. I wound up cracking the tranny pump and having the trans rebuilt.
If you can spin the convertor when the trans is pulled back I'd triple check that the convertor is properly seated into the pump. When you spin it it should push back 2 times. It's pretty easy to get it in the first part of the way and think its good, but you have to turn it some more to get it all the way down.

I think you may not have the TC fully seated... DO NOT try to start the engine or your front pump will be fubar.

Yeah sounds like your TC isnt going into the pump, I believe there are actually 3 engagements putting the TC to the tranny.

Indeed. It can be a ***** sometimes, you have to make sure it's fully seated or your tranny will need some new hard parts.

Yes, this is right, and this keeps it all from turning, too.

I've done this on 2 installs so far... I have 2 cars...

The third one is the drag; but you can hear each step as it drops in.

I got it to turn over, something bent that spacer plate between the trans and engine. I had a T/C nut started and forgot about it after I had it all together, I guess when I tried to turn the engine over to put the nuts on it caught and bent that thing.

If the engine turns over fine by hand now, do you think I'll be good now, or should I pull this bastard out one more time today?

Thanks for all the input guys,

Branodn

If it will turn over by hand without binding, with all the bolts in and tight, it should be ok.

Mine wouldn't move at all with the TC bound up.

In your case, I'd turn it over with fuse 15 pulled, just to make sure there isn't a piece of that metal gasket hanging where it can hit; You won't hear it with the engine running.

Glad you found it!
