Toyota 5 SP tranny noise question...HELP !

Hello All,

Looking for some info as to the cause of a noise. Just picked up a 95 Toyota Corolla 5 speed with 100K for my youngest boy. I drove the car around the streets where the owner lives and the car ran great and I ended up buying it. Got it home and my son registered the car and came down from NH. to pick it up. Turns out there is a growling noise (looseness) coming form the tranny in 4th and 5th at highway speed. Goes away with the clutch depressed. No ticking in slow turns so I do not think it is a CV joint. Any help would be appreciated. I am really ticked at myself for not catching it.

Mark

I had a similar problem years ago on a Subaru; seems like it was the pilot bearing or throwout bearing, I forget which. Seems like the pressure on the clutch makes it quit rattling.

Maybe someone else knows a better answer.

If it were the pilot or throwout bearing, wouldn't it do it in any gear and not just fourth and fifth?

Needs more stall.

Mark, I asked someone about the bearing thing; he said the test was if you rev it in neutral, you hear it growl at some rpm.

It was the pilot bearing on mine.

Turned out it was a final drive bearing noise. Contacted the old owner and he said it was making that noise for 5 or 6 years and never got worse. I will not toss a grand into this little car so I am going to let it o for a while to see how it does. I was told by a shop it could stay the same for many years. Oh well I am just ticked at myself for not picking up on it.
