I need a new explorer tranny

I have a '96 eddie bauer explorer and I need another transmission. I found one in a junk yard with 80,000 miles for 700$ and got a quote from a trans shop for a factory rebuild with a 1 year warranty installed for 2100$. Any other ideas?

thanks

If your able to at least remove and re-install the tranny yourself. You should be able to cut that price in half, and at least triple the warranty.

Just say no to junkyard a4ld's. $2100 sounds high, but if you get estimates under 1800 I'd say they are going to jack the price up once they get you in there, unless you can find someone who is self employed without all the overhead.

If they are willing to pay the labor and fluid go for it.
I put 4 in for a guy and when the 4th broke he junked it. All to save $300, it ended up costing him $600 over what rebuilding it would cost. The radiator was flushed the first 2 times and then bypassed for a hayden 679.
He was towing way too much weight with it however.

If you don't mind going to Aurora IL to pickup, you can have a 4WD 96 explorer trans for $250...
