One for the trans gurus

I just picked up a 96 Explorer with the 5.0 and awd. From what i gather, it's a 4R55E transmission. My question is about the fluid. The owner's manual says to use Mercon fluid but i'm wondering, if like my bird, i should use straight Mercon or use the Mercon 5?
