95 with annoying NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)

So the question after the long story is, has anyone successfully used hose clamps to balance their drive shaft?

Runs good till about 30 m.p.h. then it starts shaking. Smooths out around 50. It'll do it under acceleration, cruising, and to a lesser extent coasting. I put in new Mercon V trans fluid including the torque converter. The spark plugs and wires had about two years on them so I replace them, with Motorcraft parts. It had been four years so I picked up a spare set of rims, got two new tires, tried them on the front wheels and then on the back wheels. Problem persists. Put it up on jackstands with it in drive and noticed a lot of wobble at the front of the driveshaft. Pushed up on the transmission and there is no play with the crossmember. I don't think it's U-joints because it doesn't clunk when putting into drive or reverse. I've read about the problems with the two-piece driveshaft and am guessing that's the problem. I'm not the only one who drives it but I don't think it's been damaged. Do these driveshafts just eventually "go"?

I'd like to try the hose clamps next... has anyone done that where it smoothed out the vibration? Car is a LX with 189,000, 4.6, automatic, no performance mods, and original exhaust.

Thanks.
Jim

Pull the driveshaft and if you want a good upgrade at a decent price, get a 1993 Mark VIII one-piece shaft.
Have it balanced and new u-joints installed b4 you put it in so you know you won't have any problems!

I have one in my 95, but I didn't have it balanced and I wish I had - anything above 80 mph and it vibrates (the vibration loosened up the tailing extension housing twice already).

My local junkyard is part of an auto recycling mega-consortium and charges top dollar. How much do you think I should expect to pay for a '93 Mark VIII one-piece driveshaft? Thanks.

Keep an eye on the Parts For Sale forum, they do pop up once in a while.

Thanks Joe. I've checked ebay, there's a few 93s and the prices aren't bad. Will check the junk yard and see if they can handle a 93 rather than a 93-98.

Any idea why ebay's compatibility feature on 93 Mark VIII driveshaft auctions indicates the part is not compatible with a 95 Thunderbird LX? Maybe only because it's not the same as original equipment, maybe the input shaft needs to be swapped, or could it be that it's compatible with the SC but not with the LX? Thanks.

Because it's got a bad data base?

See http://forums.tccoa.com/showpost.php...74&postcount=1 for the actual lengths.
