Joint Tool or C Clamp and sockets?

Anyone have a good way of dropping u-joints other than the joint tool or C Clamp and sockets?

Like to hear what others have used.

I've used a ball joint press clamp and sockets.. easy.




There is of course the ole hammer and socket smacking on the concrete. But I don't recommend that lol. Too easy to loose the needle bearings or destroy them.

Reminds me of when I did the u joints on the Town Car a few years ago. After getting the drive shaft on the bench and the clips removed.... I did not have to do much cause the bearing caps fell off because there was no grease in the u joint and the bearings fell out and went everywhere... made life a little easier.

I tried a C clamp and socket... that was not easy. Then I tried a bigger clamp and realized I was wasting my time.

I went to down to autozone and rented a ball joint/u joint puller and press. That made light and quick work of an otherwise lengthy job.

What gets me is these clowns the rent these tools have no common sense to read the instructions that specifically say: "LUBRICATE THE THREADS..." So what kind of tool do I get when I rent one? Yep... the one with the stripped threads cause the a-hole before me never bother to use a little oil on the threads.


....and they never clean the fricken tools up before returning them... no respect I tell you, no respect.

I used a nice big bench vise, and some strategically placed sockets.

1996 Thunderbird LX (4.6), previous daily driver

1995 Mustang GT (5.0), daily driver
1995 GMC C2500 (5.7), alternate daily driver

Nice.... "strategically" placed sockets.... I should try that sometime... lol

Drive shaft it back in with new U Joints, cleaned up transmission mount and no popping sound in the exhaust.

Still getting a little clunk from the tranny, but it was never in that good of shape since i bought it. Had to rebuild the shift kit on it and added a little stronger kick to the shifting so that would account for the slight clunk. But I don't hear it from the rear anymore.

On the driveshaft, I had to remove the cat forward, drop the tank about 10" or so to get the shaft out, remove the exhaust bar and had to use wrenches as mentioned to remove the rear shaft bolts. Used smaller jacks on either side of the tank to hold it up, or let it down. The four tank bolts came out really easy and were very easy to access. The worse part was dropping the CAT forward assembly. It is just HEAVY. Putting it back in I used a jack to hold it up at the mid muffler and straps down through the engine bay to pull up and hold the CATs up while I positioned them to mount.

Anyway, thanks all for your input, I appreciate the help I get here.
