Lightbulb Which fluid?

I have a 1997 Tbird. Should have the the tranny flushed by the local service place where they hook it to the machine and "flush" all the fluid" or to a Transmission shop the drops the pan. I have 80 K and have never changed the fluid and am not have any problems. Which fluid does this tranny require? the owners guide just stated Mercon.

Thanks, Darrell.

I strongly suggest that you use only Mercon V fluid.

Not mercon III.

Drain the torque converter, and install a new filter and a transmission cooler when you are servicing it.

Read the tech article from the front page, as to how to properly drain your transmission fluid. Just dropping the pan won't even get close to all the fluid. If you follow the tech article, you will get all the fluid except for a quart or so out of the transmission.

IMO, its important to get that pan off to clean up the lining debris that coats its bottom, and clean the steel filings off the magnet, and check for major metal chunks that might give you early warning of serious trouble. A flush will leave all that stuff in there.
