4r70w diagnosis

ok......well....its not as bad as i thought.......when the tranny is really cold.....it doesnt like to shift out of 1st it holds it wayyy longer then it should......then when it warms up the tranny just shifts like it usually does......a hard 1-2 shift that is later then it should be.....and every once in a while it will bounce off wot....this is so rare ive done it 3 times in 4 months.....does anyone have any input as to what may be dead or messed up in the tranny.....im just curious i dont need to know at all im buying a hole new better tranny for the car

check out JW's thesis in the transmission tech articles.

He has some troubleshooting in there. It sounds like "1-2 shift that ends with a big bang, and may bounce off the rev limiter" is your problem.

Don't bother rebuilding the 95 trans, go for a 98+ 4r70w ($500 bucks or so) or a Dennis Built Unit ($1500 plus shipping I beleive)

I'm assuming that is a junkyard price right? That would be a good idea... search junkyards for 98 MK8 tranny w/ TC.... I'd do that before I paid for a rebuild.

Just my idea...

Good idea, it was my idea too. My trans had 9k miles on it and I paid 500 including shipping. Just had to swap a few sensors, and swap the electrical harness, and works great. The GT tranny has a different output shaft than the mn12/mark cars, therefore your speedo will not be accurate if you have a higher gear ratio than 3.27. You can either rebuild the new GT trans and put the mn12 output shaft in it, or you can just buy a mark trans. I chose the latter of the two.

1) the 8 tooth shaft can be corrected with either a 21 tooth speedo gear, or one of those speedcal boxes... its not worth tearing into the tranny over.

2) speedcal box will also correct if he ever gets higher gears. though I heard troy brand was working on something similar.... but that has yet to be seen.
