Unhappy 1-2 Shift

A Friend of mine just bought him self a '95 T-Bird LX 3.8 with 110k miles on it. It was pretty hard shifting 1 to 2 gear so I gave him the tech article on the springs going in the trany. He took the car to his mechanic, he was not surprised. Both upper and lower springs were in peaces and who ever had the car before him fried the tranny fluid. So he drains the trany, replaces the springs, and now the real fun begins, now the there is no more kick. Now it just does not wont to shift. The car will rev to about 3500 rpm stay there and if you play with the gas paddle it will finely shift. It's a very smooth shift though LOL. Any thoughts? Is my friend in deep #$%^ or can this be fixed. The mechanic said he has seen this before and the dealer can reprogram the EEC to correct for this.

We did try to unplug the battery for 20 min to try to reset the computer, no luck. We are not sure if it has been chipped or not.

Chances are that you transmission fluid level is low. You can only check the level with a warm transmission.

This is not uncommon since when your fluid was drained some of the fluid going to the cooler on the radiator (and etc) may have leaked out and from other places. Equalization occurs and your fluid level goes low. Good luck.

I agree. Did they install the updated accumulators (I hope) ?

96 Mustang GT 5spd. w/ 248A Option (GTS). Stock for now until I get the Roush on.

Added liquid it helped, but still very sluggish. No the mechanic did not replace the accumulator.

(Where is that shotgun. @$$#%$*&$)

Ask the mechanic whether it had the all aluminum accumulator with the o-rings or the steel one with the rubber bonded onto it. If its the old one its likely the problem and needs to be replaced.

All right, all fixed. The accumulator was replaced the first time arround. However a wrong upper spring was used. So it caused all sorts of problems with the trany. Right parts are in. The car is running like new.

A side node. The previous owner drove this trany like this for a while and did not change the liquid for a long time, to a point where it was noticeable in color smell, texture, and the works. It was cooked. With springs, and the accumulator replaced, and with fresh fluids in, how long do you guys think it would last or should the car go on sale ASAP?

my 95's tranny lasted for 92k, before the TC finally toasted itself and took the tranny out with it. If you're over 100k, you should plan on it happening in the future. Some live to be really strong, some don't. The 100k seems to be around the average though, IMO.

Some go out sooner than that, but some last a long time, like Silver95Bird said. I'm still on my original tranny with 142,000 miles on it, but my car is the exception. I wouldn't sell it because the tranny goes out, I would put a '98 Mark VIII tranny in it with a '99 valvebody, and call it a day.
