How to check differential play
I just bought my first cougar not to long ago and I am going over the vehicle checking things out.
I was checking the half-shafts (which the CV joints are oK) when I noticed movement within the differential when I rotated the half-shaft back and forth. I checked my Hanes manual to see what the limit was on this play and it just says to check for excessive play.
What is excessive play? Mine rotates approximately 1/2".
The check is done by grabbing the half-shaft and rotating it forward and back. The play is where the shaft enters the differential. The tranny is in park with wheels on the ground.
