What tranny is in...

What tranny is in a '95 5.0 mustang?
Will it fit behind my 3.8 and what mods. do I need to make it work?

a 95 Mustang has an AODE. Not the 4R70W you have in a 94+ Tbird... you'd need a chip, and a 21 tooth speedo gear to make up for the 8 tooth output shaft if you were to try it though. Not worth the time or effort, as the 4R70W's ratios are wider, which helps at the start. Also just as weak (or weaker) than what you've got already.

96 Mustang GT 5spd. w/ 248A Option (GTS). Stock for now until I get the Roush on.

24k B&M Cooler, 1" lowered, Steeda UD Pulleys, Dynomax cat-back, J-mod, 3.73's, PI intake, PI cams, 03 GT MAF/Tube, SCT tuned - Gone but not forgotten.

I did a parts search on car-part.com for 95' stang w/5.0 and a few 4r70w's came up from 94 and 95 mustangs.

yeah that's a common problem online. However the gear ratios are different 9-5 mustang vs the later ones, and it won't work. Sorry bud.

Sorry, but on my lunch break today I drove to the ford dealer and spoke to a friend in the parts department. He typed in trans. for 95' mustang. The primary part came up as AOD E, along with compatable trannys, which were 4R70W, and 4R75W. He said it should bolt up without much trouble at all, if any. The 3.8's and 5.0's have the same bolt pattern, and the 4.6's and 5.0's are different.

So the AOD E will work, but I will loose a little acceleration without the wider gear of the 4R70W.

yes but all of your shifts will be all out of whack... the EEC is expecting wide ratios and if you swap in a close ratio it will skew the shift points. I'd wager a guess to say it would upshift much sooner than the 4R70W does, making it a dog to drive around.
A chip can correct for this, but if youre spending money on it, why not just buy a 98 mark trans or a 98+ mustang trans?

agree with Silverbird, but he has a 3.8, so his upgrade would be a 98+ 3.8 mustang 4r70w, not a mark8 transmission.

He would also need a speedcal to make the speedometer work, as well as swapping electronics etc, and the rest of the usual stuff.

search if you don't know what i'm talking about.

Sorry about that... shouldve thought about the bolt pattern.

a 21 tooth speedo gear will suffice for the VSS if he doesnt intend a gear swap.

94-5 mustang electronics are the same as 94-5 Tbird stuff, I just doublechecked in jerry's article.
unknown whether the MLPS lever is the same or not.

But the EEC is still going to have a fit when it thinks its shifting a 4R70W.

????
Also why would you need to change the speedo gear? I am not changing my final drive ratio.

the output shafts have a different gearing on them so the speedo would be off with the same tooth gear.

Actually by changing the transmission ratios, you are changing the final drive ratio in 3 of the 4 gears. Hence the problems I spoke of before. The speedo gears you can get at any ford dealer. I really hope you're ordering a chip when you do this...

For an update...

The 95 Mustang tranny bolted in fine but the driveshaft yoke was a different size and the tail shafts had to be swapped out.
I still had the same problems after the tranny was swapped.

Turns out that it was the PCM, Ford's tech support even had problems diagnosing the problem, but also confirmed problems having an aod-e in place of the 4r70w having different ratios. The only real problem being not the PCM having trouble shifting a different trans. but the trans itsself being constantly shifted at the incorrect RPM, and the trans will be dead within a few thousand miles. The old tranny is going back in tomarrow and I will finally be back on the road.

I don't even think I remembered the yoke issue, i should have... but we did try to warn you about the shifting problem. The timing of the shifts would be annoying but livable, but I bet Ford suspected the line pressures would have been too low. I just hope they're right in diagnosing the EEC as being bad... good luck gettin the car back on the road again!

Repin wiring harness, install correct MLPS and TCC for your car and install correct speedo gear

i'm new to the 4r70w crowd, so the mlps that will be used is the one off the mustang or the one off the bird? and by tcc, you mean the convertor, right? and i assume the speedo gear will be the one off of the original tranny, correct? god, i sound like such a noob, lol, how embarrasing.

you'd use the MLPS off of the bird, and you'd also have to swap the shifter linkages as well, from what I've experienced with the modular 4r70w's, I dont know if the v6 4r60w's are any different.
