Tranny Problem, and my laziness

Well, as most of you know, I've been gone for about a month, playing in the big sandbox of Southern California, and when I got home, I hopped in the Cougar to play around a little. I just redid my JMod about a month before I left, and when the car was cold, the tranny does not engage in 1st gear right. It doesn't happen all the time. It will slip into neutral when completely stopped and the tranny is cold, haven't had it happen when it's warm. I've checked the fluid level, and it's fine. My next steps are to pull the tranny pan, check and make sure the filter is still in there, and retorque the valve body bolts. Anyone ever had this happen to them? I'm pretty swamped with working on the 2 projects I have right now, and any help that could cut down time and trouble would be appreciated.
