Art Carr Tranny, fluid - anything special?

Am going to have the Art Carr tranny I bought installed tomorrow, and know that it'll need to be topped up after we're done.

Do they need any special type of fluid, or just the normal stuff?

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question - but my mechanic told me to ask...

I have the AOD tranny and when I changed my fluid and filter I refilled with Mercon V and used Lucas oil additive. If you check what the books say it'll tell you to use the Mercon/Dexron II only because Mercon V wasn't out at the time.

OK, but this is a brand new tranny, think it'd have Mercon V in it?

If I get the wrong fluid, would it screw it up?

It probably has Mercon III, since that's the recommended fluid for an AOD. Mercon V wasn't recommended until the later 4R70W models, since it has a tendency to make the seals leak.

Maybe that's why my current AOD failed, for the 2nd time. Nah, it's my abusive driving ! It lasted 5 years, which is long enough for a home rebuild.

Well, didn't have to buy fluid today anyways, the business I bought it off of managed to provide me with an AOD for a truck - which has a 1" longer tail stock and output shaft - and therefore won't fit in my car.

But I'm 99% sure he didn't know better as he is just a middle man, and am sure he'll do what it takes to make it right.
