Question Manual tranny Vs. A J-Mod

I was curious, I hear constantly J-Modding a tranny does wonders for it, but what about in comparision to a manual transmission?

Would for example a J-Modded tranny outdo a manual in performance?

There's no way someone can shift a T-5/T-45/T-56 as fast as a J-Modded 4R70W does on it's own!! Consistency!

TCCoA, there's no better way.

It depends on what your definition of "performance" is.

IMHO it really matters on the application.

I would say for drag racing the auto is the way to go.

But for the "fun factor" I would say a manual is the way to go.

Again, just my opinions and lets try to not make this a "manual vs. automatic" flame fest.

Wouldn't a manual = slightly better gas mileage over the auto?

These are highly engineered precision vehicles, the first step in diagnosing the problem is to strike the suspected offending part sharply and repeatedly with a blunt object, then re-test.

I am pretty sure that an auto trans. robs more HP from the engine than a manual, also the manual trans gives better gear ratios. For best performance I would take a manual any day over an auto, and yes, a manual almost always gets a little better MPG.

There is some inherent "slip" involved with all automatic transmissions unless (until) they lock up to the crank at a 1:1 rotation. Some do, some don't. I don't believe our's do, but if I'm wrong I'll be corrected.

And I agree with DD94....Manual=Fun! That is until you have to pull the tranny out to change the clutch slave cylinder, then Manual=Pain or Dollars....Pain if you do the work yourself, Dollars if someone else does it for you!

the cost of getting the j-mod done is waaaayyyy cheaper than swapping to a t-45

Just doing hte J-mod helps, but once Jerry reprograms the shift schedule and TC lock/unlock points, the car is WAY WAY different. I couldn't believe how it drove after Jerry tuned the car, the shift schedule is awesome. Every shift is very quick.

Does anyone have a DFI unit like a FAST on a car with the J-Mod to say how quick the shifts are? I have a MK8 and I don't totally agree that an automatic can be shifted faster thena manual with a good driver. I'd like to see if anyone has true #'s of shift times. I can shift anywhere between .1-.18 seconds in every gear consistantly (through the FAST datalogger) and just curious how much faster this J-Mod is? Thanks Rob

T-45 all the way....you'll love it. And people will constantly tell you you are full of BS, and your car came factory with the 5-speed....and they made 5-speed V8 birds. I get it all the time. i want to slap the crap out of them....it really chaps thier *** when I tell them its the only 97 in the world with the T-45. Well, unless someone else has completed a swap in thier 97 in the past year.

Dude, how much of a difference do you feel with the T-45? Is it like the Supercoupe manual or even better?

What car would you compare the shifting of the T-45 to?


Also... how much? If I did that.. I'd have a shop do it.

T45 is a pretty nicely designed transmission inside but unfortunately it doesn't hold up to a lot of power. This is the stand transmission in all mustangs 96-mid 99. The T45 actually shares a few parts with its beefier cousin the T56. I rebuild manuals as a side job and am surprised that the T45 won't hold up to more abuse then it does. I would stay away from any factory production 5 spd's from Ford as they are generally weak and you will be rebuilding them if you are aggressive on the shifter or making a lot of power. The alternative is the obvious Tremec 3550 or TKO which the 3550 is much more user friendly and the all popular T56 which is by far the best manual tranny made without going pro-shifted or Lenco style. Also keep in mind if you go with a 5spd or 6spd your chances of better performance are right there with the chance of better gas mileage. With the 6spd you will have 3 gears before your 1:1 gear, this will obviously aid in moving these tuna boats, we all love and drive, from a stop with less effort on the motor; same goes with the 5spd as you will have 3 gears before the 1:1 gear also. You most likely are gonna be looking at a custom length driveshaft if you go 6spd. I would take a guess and say you will need a custom driveshaft for the 5spd also as when you order driveshafts for mustangs they sell you a part for manuals and automatics. Could just be a mktg'ing ploy though as I've never measured the auto d/s's. Good luck I know I personally would love a T56 in my car as soon as I can afford to get the parts and fab it up.

It cost me nearly 2500 to do the swap...but then I took no shortcuts, and bought all the best stuff. If you shop around, and buy some good deals on used ebay parts you can do it for less. I spent a lot of meney on my clutch, shifter, and AN fittings and braided lines.

The car is a blast to drive now....totally different car. the shifting of a mustang, with the driveabillity of a road car you wouldn't mind driving across the country.

As for someone doing it for you at a shop....better be a good hotrod custom fab shop. this isn't a bolt in...you need several custom made parts, and a shorter driveshaft. I myself used a true 98 cobra trans, which made thisgs a bit harder since the casting mount is further back then the GT version of the trans. Dont buy any 99 or newer tras., they are tremecs and junk. Plus I dont know if any of the dimentions are different.

Mcleod has a modular bellhousing available now that lets you fit the F-Body T56 onto your engine. The F-body T56 puts the shifter really close.

My thought is a Cobra T56 might be easier to do because it comes with the bellhousing for the 4.6, and the shifter should be in the same place as the T45, so one could probably use papajohns adapter (modified) to move the shifter back. Also, I think (not positive, though) that the cobra T56 has a place to put a spedo gear where the F body trans doesn't use a gear (again, I think)...

Interesting reading. My '94 supercharged bird is used for autocross racing. Its a bit slower than the ZO 6 cars but after last weekend, faster than two Cobra kit cars and a couple of new Mustang Cobras. Been racing it for a couple of years now, maybe 4 events a year.....don't know how you people destroy the T-45 trans. maybe its just the drivers. PapaJohn

I don't know the definate answer on this one, but mine says Tremec on it, but has a Borg Warner sticker, or vice-versa, can't remember right now.

I am still curious then.. What would probably do better on the strip / road?

A J-Modded transmission (drilled to 250 - 300 HP) or the T-45 transmission (since it is talked about a lot)?

Well, the J-Mod obviously.

I don't plan to dump $2000 into a T-45.. I wouldn't even consider it. I LOVE driving with a stick, but I will wait until I get my sports car before I do that.
