Greenleaf Transmissions?

Hey guys,
Need to replace tranny in my 97 bird, I did a search and found people ordering 98 mark 8 trannys. Is this the best choice? I have also seen posts of people getting the truck tranny or even a newer mustang tranny. If I were to get the mark 8 what will need to be done to put in my car? Also when i went to greenleaf.com it asked if i wanted the trans with ID or w/o ID, which one would I want. Thanks

I just finished installing a 01 mustang trans for mine from Greenleaf. They work just fine and are quite a bit newer with fewer miles on them than the Mark Viii units. Mine has 12,000 miles and I paid $650 shipped

I got a 20k mile Greenleaf tranny from a 98 mark.

There are no issues with it so far.

I see that you have the mark converter, so that means you have the propper flexplate. Youre pretty much good to go, the only thing is that you have to repin the connector for the transmission, and use your current MLPS.

If you get a mustang unit it's pretty much the same. Use your MLPS, VSS, and TCC solonoid. Repin the connector and your good to go. The mustang has the same size converter as a Mark so you need the smaller flexplate if you are running a stock Tbird converter

Another important thing, if you want to run a gear ratio higher (numerically) than 3.27, then you need to do a few things to make the speedo accurate if you are using the transmission in a tbird.

You can either rebuild the transmission, and install a Mark8 output shaft to make the speedo accurate.

Or you can get a speedcal box to make the speedo accurate (about 100 bucks)

Or, you can run a non ford (steeda) higher tooth speedo gear.

The downside with the more teeth you get on a speedo gear, the faster it wears out.

ChadG told me that he runs a 24 tooth speedo gear for 3.73 gears, and he hasn't had a problem with it yet.

This might be the easiest way to solve this problem.

If someone can post scans of the pinouts for the connector, that would be awesome. Alot of people request it, and the link I had to the pictures is now dead.

Thanks,
Justin

I got a 00 GT tranny with 1k miles from greenleaf for ~$350 shipped. Changed the flexplate, jmod, speedcal and it was done.. The newer trannies are supposed to be a little stronger.

I'm not 100% sure if it would be for this application but I think Fast ed told me that you can use a Dodge Speed-o gear.. I'm pretty sure it was dodge..

Its a lot cheaper then steeda

As long as you are only running a 3.08 or 3.27 Dan Newman has the purple gear for about $8
