CEL and no foward gears

so i was driving down the freeway yesterday and i'd get a check engine light and the engine would just free rev, like it wasn't put in drive, or any gear for that matter. then it'd go back to normal. it did it a few times. was wondering what to expect damage wise and what might be the matter with it. also, there was a sulfur smell that we thought was coming from outside the car, turned out it was coming from the car! would this be from transmission or from a overcharging alternator?

Sounds like the MLPS. The idiot at NAPA or wherever will tell you its the neutral safety switch. Same sensor, they just don't know the right name for it. lol

Neither does Ford ! They have three official names for it:

1. MLPS
2. Neutral Safety Switch
3. Transmission Range sensor.

XR7 kid;

I vote MLPS on this one, too.

One of the symptoms is the car dropping into neutral from 3rd or OD, and then going back into gear a short time later.

$55-$65, and 30 minutes of your time
