Question Blinking Overdrive light

Ok,

I know I've seen this on here a couple of times....


but on my way home from work tonight the od light started blinking. I had to jump my car at work because the ALT isnt charging well.... But, is the blinking light tied to one thing? or do I have to get the error code checked to know anything?

the fluid might be overheat. also i see your sig that the cooler are being cooled by computer fan???

160 cfm fan are not enough to cool the fluid. also the fan may blocked airflow to the cooler.

cant be, the car was sitting at my work for 7 hours... and when I started it up the light started blinking.... so the fluid being as cold as it can get... I dont think that is the problem.

mine blinks too sometimes...but only when its raining outside

Maybe since the alt. isn't putting out the proper voltage, and since the trans. is controlled by the EEC, then it may be blinking to indicate that it sees a low voltage condition to the trans?? Hope it's that. When mine started blinking, it started to spell the end of my trans.

before i replaced my tranny, it said that the temp sensor was burnt or something, now i havent checked it...i will soon tho

Nobody in town can pull my error code!

Some of them have scanners that will only work on 96 an above cars. And others cant scan my type of error code.... (stereo type of code I guess)

What the heck am I left to do? Just buy a sct scan and mod tool?

u should be able to pull codes out of ur computer. 94-95 v8 cars have partial obd-2 compliance, go to your local ricerzone (autozone) they should be able to do it, or u can do it urself.

Vato-Zone cannot pull the tranny codes as far as I know. I have tried this at 3 diff. stores an they all said that there were no codes found. And yes, the OD light was blinking at the time they tried.

can u buy something simular for a 96-7 car?

Transmission codes are not always hard codes. You may need a snap on scanner or ford NGS system to pull those codes.

ok,

Called around and found that checker auto claimed they had a reader that would work on a 1994 OBD II system. Wen and used it to find out it connected to the computer but I think I only reads MIL codes, not Tranny codes.... (or something)

Also, you had to set the reader up to the year and make of the car, I used the 94 ford option but It was trying to connect to a OBD I system, so I set it to 96 ford which then tried to connect to aOBD II system and worked, but said that there were no trouble codes.

I used the "clear codes" option, and the light has yet to come on again. But we will see with some more driving if it finds the problem again, Im thinking I might have ZAPED something when I jump started my car the other night. What do you guys think?

Anyway, its shifting fine, and running fine.

Anyone know what code reader will work on our 94/95 obdII systems? I will look at buying on it it will work. will the SCT excaliber work? that way I can tune some things too? Or does that thing only work on 96+ OBD II?


Let me know, and thanks guys for as much help as you can offer me.

Blinking OD light is for a transmission problem. I called up a local guy when i had the light flash on mine, and the code I came up with was for abnormal clutch slippage or something of that sort. The thing with this code is that if you have it, and the car doesn't have the problem for a while, it will erase it on it's own if the problem doesn't come back, or at least it did on my car.

A Ford NGS will be able to retreive it. Snap-on, MAC, and I believe OTC also sell scan tools that can to this. Software is available to use a Palm Pilot as an actual scan tool, but it is only generic, not Ford specific. You may be able to find a used NGS on eBay, as technicians and dealerships upgrade to tools that can access the new CAN system.

The problem with ricerzone's "scanner" is that it isn't really a scanner, it's a generic OBD II code reader. Also, in addition to the regular OBD II codes there are manufacturer-specific codes. These are the ones with a 1 as the second character on the code line. Example: P1173. Since some transmission codes are specific to Ford, only a Ford scan tool can tell you what they are, if the AutoZone tool ever did manage to read them, it still would not be able to give you a code definition. Good luck, and hopefully you won't have make a trip to the dealership to get that code scanned.

I hope this helps. Ford had a problem with the electronic range sensor that is mounted on the tranny. It caused shifting problems where the motor seamed to miss a gear, usually at the 1-2 shift point. It feels like it jumps out of gear, or you missed a shift. It also controls the line pressure to a degree. It also partially controls your overdrive signal in conjunction with the ECM.. This could be causing your problem. Diagnostic tools- Your car is an OBD-II system. It was used on the Ford Thunderbird in '94-'95 prior to the mandatory '96 inception. The Diagnostic port is located under the passanger side of your dash between your glove box and center console. It is very easy to see. Actron Has a very good Diagnostic OBD-II scanner that will retrieve and read your codes. It is the CP9135. It also comes with a CD to down load on your PC with all the codes and definitions for all OBD-II vehicles built after '96, and, the '94-'95 T'bird. How do I know? I had my headache before yours!!! I had the same problem Sunday. I just shifted to 2nd and then back to Drive and the light went away. I wasn't going fast enough to shift into 3rd, and the car was absolutely stone cold.

The Parts Bin Special is DEAD! It is being parted out.

My O/D light started blinking when I stepped hard on the gas with the engine cold or hot , I would pull over turn the car off for a minute or two and it would stop blinking until next time I had to pass or come off a light too quick , after a while it was blinking all the time , by then , my tranny was gone , I guess the time between the first time it blinked and the time the transmission was seriously slipping , about 8 months
