Exclamation My Bird Has Bad Vibes?

I JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER 1994 BIRD. IT HAD A NEW TRANSMISSION INSTALLED. IM UNSURE IF ITS A 4R70W OR THE AODE. THE GUY BEFORE ME WHO HAD THE TRANS INSTALLED DIDNT KNOW ETHIER. AND AS OF RIGHT NOW I DONT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR. WHAT IM GETTING AT IS AT 40MPH IT VIBES LIKE HELL AND GETS WORSE THE FASTER YOU GO.I WAS FIRST THINKING THAT THEY USED THE OLD AODE DRIVESHAFT WITH A 4R70W TRANS, AND THAT WAS CAUSEING THE VIBES. NOW I THINK MABE IT HAS THE WRONG TRANS FLUID.. ARE THERE ANY MARKINGS ON THE TRANS CASE THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT KINDA TRANS IS IN THIS CAR??? AND WOULD A MISS MATCHED DS AND TRANS CAUSE THE BAD VIBES?TO ME THE VIBES SEEM TO BE COMING FROM THE REAR.. I HAVE READ JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ON THIS WEBSITE AND IVE GOT ALOT OF IDEAS OF WHAT IT COULD BE. MAYBE ONE OF YALL HAVE DONE A TRANS SWAP? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!!

Have you checked your u-joints in the driveshaft? That would be where I would start.

Your car has a 4R70W. Some people try to say that it is an AODE but all MN12's that came with the 4.6 have the 4R70W. The first thing to look at is (as cougarnut281 pointed out) the u-joints. Try to turn the driveshaft by hand with the transmission in park. If you can twist it around its time for u-joints. If not, your driveshaft may not have been put in properly. When it is removed, you are supposed to mark it so that it bolts back on in the exact same spot for balancing. It sounds like this may not have been done.

how could i check if the driveshaft was put back in the right? i wish it wasnt such a chore to get to the driveshaft!!

Basically it is a guessing game. You may have to unbolt it, turn it 90°, bolt it back up and see how it works. You may have to repeat a few times. I've also heard of people pulling the d/s from the tranny and turning it off of the tranny.

Yes, you just can't remove the d/s with the gas tank in.

I do. I have never removed a gas tank except to change the pump. Drop the rearend down and slide it back, once the transmission is out it can come out the front.

Well of course. I easily pulled mine out when I had the tranny and engine out. However, most people don't want to pull the tranny out just to get the d/s out.

I would rather yank the trans than the gas tank. Call me crazy, but I hate those rusty straps and brittle lines.

have you check the tranny mount??? Sounds like there is something loose
I ran into the same prob on my friends z-28, i jacked up the car and then turned on the car and put it on drive from there we were able to notice that the shop that had just rebuilding his tranny had not put the mount right....

do also check the u-joints

Also check to see that the driveshaft bolts are not loose. if they aren't put in with some loctite on them, they can loosen up over time.
both sides of the DS can be indexed. There are 6 bolts you need to remove on the pumpkin (2 front, 4 for the rear support) then 4 on the DS itself. Slide the DS back. Look on the trans output shaft for a white paint marking on the splines. Also notice the yoke has a section with a spline missing. Match the two parts up and slide them together. Now mark a bolt hole on the DS, and also mark the spot on the flange you bolt it to.
See how it drives. Try rotating it 180*, then 90, then 180 from there... try each combination and see which one works best for you.

And not to overlook the obvious, jack the back wheels up and make sure the wheels don't wobble. Make sure the bearings are in good condition.

GOT A NEW QUESTION! the guy said the driveshafts end caps were different would that make any difference? i got a guy wanting to charge me 100bux to swap the driveshafts? i dont own the car yet but should i sink 100 bux in the car and see if that fixes the vib problem? if i can get that fixed ill take it? i hate gambling..lol what would you do?

End caps? wtf is he talking about? The only end caps are part of the u-joints. And they're different? Different from what? lol. I'm not putting much faith in your mechanic at this point... but if he's talking about replacing the u-joints, it might be worth a shot on a 10 year old car.

hes not not my mach. he is some guy that the guy im getting the car from mach. when he told me that i was like you...wtf? lol should i get my mach. to pull the ds for 100bux and see if it fixs it. keep in mind i dont own this car yet but if i can get this vib. stoped ill take it.

i dont want to keep bugging yall with this problem but.. i noticed the right rear wheel the camber is off. do yall think that could be all thats whats causeing the vibe?
back to the end cap thangy...he meant that the driveshaft splines wasnt the same..
other words the drive shaft that came with the car wouldnt fit the new trans.. and its also very hard to select the gears.. but i was thinking it just a linkage issiue? thanks for all of your help, with yalls help ill get this thang fixed!!! THUNDERBIRDS UNITED!!!LOL

jack that corner up and see if the wheel wobbles around. Bearings do sometimes go bad.

Not if you have the right tools. I bought mine with the spindle already mounted on it for about $80 new from a local parts store.
