rear end question?

once apon a time, i thought about changing the 4.6 rear end with a 3.8. kinda like putting a turbo coupe rearend in a lx or 5.0... i had a friend that had a 3.8 so i looked but it looked smaller like it would bolt up right.. has any one tried this? will it work? just wondering?

dont know if it works, but the 3.8's came standard with 7.5 inch diff, while the 4.6's came with the 8.8, so my question would be, why would you want to put a smaller and probably a lower (example: you have 3.27, and that has 3.08 : dont think that is actually the gear ratios but it is an example) gear in your car?

it was just a thought, lower gear better take off. true 7.5 is not as strong but to a stock 4.6 i wouldnt think it could do much harm.
i put a turbo coupe rearend in my both of my lx's it did wonders to my off the line. but ended up blowing head gasket toying with a mini van and some kid. oops!

You'd gain exactly NOTHING and give up a good bit of strength. The 3.8L 7.5" diffs all had 3.08 gears. You want some 3.73's or 4.10's if you wanna wake your car up off the line. To do it up the best, add in a Mark VIII / Marauder converter too.

My 7.5 has a 3.27 TL. Confirmed by both the door jamb sticker and the tag on the housing.

But I wouldn't upgrade to a smaller, weaker rear end. You'd probably end up re-replacing it eventually when the performance bug hits you.

Wow, never heard of one. I guess you can learn something new every day. I had thought that if somebody ordered the limited slip 3.27, that they put it in an 8.8, not the 7.5. Oh well, the vast majority of them are 3.08 then.
